The Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is the oldest and largest wildlife sanctuary located in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. This national park was set up in 1955. The entirety of the reserve is divided between The Tadoba National Park and The Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary. 

The national park has several entry gates at a significant distance because of the large area. The accommodation facility is quite extensive as there are over 60 Tadoba hotels in the close vicinity of the reserve. 

According to the legend, it is believed that there was a village chief named Taru, who was killed by a tiger in a mythological encounter. His shrine now exists deep beneath a tree near Tadoba Lake, which the local adivasis worship. 

Best Time to Visit Tadoba 

The park remains open to visitors from October to June. Like every tropical city, Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve experiences scorching summers where the temperature rises upto 47 degrees. Inspite of the extreme heat, visiting the reserve is fruitful as you would be able to spot animals near the water bodies. Monsoon hits the Tadoba reserve in June. The core zones of the reserve remain closed, and only the buffer zones are open for the tourists from July to September because the heavy rains make those parts very difficult to access. Although the best time to visit the Tadoba Tiger Reserve is winter, which stretches from November to February when the daytime temperature ranges from 20 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees celsius. 

Things to do while in Tadoba

One of India's forty-seven Project Tiger reserves, Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, is estimated to have 115 tigers and 151 leopards. Apart from wildlife sightings, the national park has so much to offer to its tourists. Tadoba is quite undulating and hilly, where the hillocks provide shelter to the animals.

The inhabitants of the forest are tigers, Indian leopards, gaur, nilgai, wild dogs, sloth bears, sambar, jungle cats, chital, barking deer, and honey badger. Jeep safaris can be accessed via Khutwanda Gate, Moharli Gate, and Kolara Gate. Tourists can also enjoy boat rides in Irai lake and Tadoba lake. Boating in these lakes gives the tourist an opportunity to spot a wide variety of birds which is a very beautiful sight. 

Staying in Loghut, which are basic log huts constructed in the buffer zone, gives the tourist a raw experience of living in the wilds. Authorised jeeps facilitate pick up and dropping from the log huts, which provides basic accommodation to the guests. Recently a night safari was launched that begins just after the sunset 

Popular sites that can be visited are the Butterfly Garden, Ramdegi temple, and Sevagram- Gandhiji's Ashram, which is a museum that preserves artefacts.
