Elgin Fairlawn is a trip down the colonial era. The bungalow constructed in 1783 is a living art piece of the colonial royalty. Tucked away in a characteristic Old-Calcutta bylane, Elgin offers tastefully designed interiors retained in its full glory. The rooms are spacious, food is tasty and offers a wide blend of English, continental, local cuisine options. If you enjoy reading history, you can spend half the day going walking by memories captured in frames of the East india company’s rule and the evolution of Kolkata. I’d recommend staying on the 1st floor as rooms on the ground floor can get noisy as the dining area is adjacent,

The location was excellent. It was a respite from the busyness of Kolkata! The first floor is very well maintained. The stairs to the second floor and the large room like a sitting room is in ruins. The walls are peeling, and there is mould on the ceiling. It is quite sad. That said, my bedroom was huge, QUIET (forest someone in 4 placed that was quiet!), and absolutely gorgeous. My bathroom was also large and provided a bathtub and even a comfortable bathrobe. The second floor also has a lovely balcony that is well maintained. The staff are excellent! Very professional, friendly, and helpful. Despite its need for a major restoration, I would highly recommend the Elgin Fairlawn! Just to visit this historical Hotel is worth the visit.

The location of the hotel is excellent - especially for a tourist either best places in and around. The ambience is historic with beautiful rooms and look of a british bungalow a gem from history - almost a 300 year old structure - f&b needs to be worked on. The housekeeping staff and shankar are excellent - dining staff needs training and the chef is great at few dishes and a disaster at some. Overall a fab place, fab location and fab ambience

A charming heritage boutique hotel, dating from the British Raj. The public areas are full of photos of a romantic bygone era. We were lucky to be given room no 17 - a favorite of famous yesteryear Bollywood actor Shashi Kapoor - he met his wife Jennifer for the first time here and always stayed in this room during his numerous Kolkata visits. Also preferred hotel of many celebrities - Dominique LaPierre (French author of 'Freedom at Midnight, musician Sting, German novelist Gunter Grass , and many others. The food is delicious. The hotel is frequented by people from the world of liberal arts , educators and NGOs. Conveniently located near the Indian Museum, and a 5 min walking distance from Park Street - the happening area of Kolkata. A strong recommendation to stay at this hotel. (As an aside, we stumbled upon the services of yellow Ambassodor cab driver Raju Das who took us around Kolkata on a 6 hour guided tour at a reasonable price of Rs 1200. A big thumbs up to him too) Kolkata was truly the City of Joy for me and my wife.

I had a very pleasant stay at elgin fairlawn. I thoroughly enjoyed the heritage feel of the hotel and the beautiful ambience it has. The food was nice and the outdoor cafe was lovely. Great place for a vacation and would love to go back someday.

The location of this hotel is good but environment is very noisy because of market and all. Food quality was good as well. Hotel gives a vintage vive which is very good for photography and all. Staffs behavior is very good they always try to help. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

The location is great if you want to get around central kolkata. The breakfast is a pre formulated menu with little to choose from could be better if buffet was laid. The property is definitely a heritage structure with a lot of history. Over all a cosy place to stay and friendly staff.

The stay went well. The staff was really accommodating and kind. The ambience is fantastic, and the property has been maintained rather well. Also really pleased with the services they offer. And without any hesitation, they granted my request for a late check-out. The breakfast buffet was also really fantastic. I will recommend this location to anybody visiting kolkatha. One of the best heritage hotel in kolkata.

It’s my Mixed reaction on Stay at Elgin … I like a lot of Food , Staff and Way of. Beauty but no Rooms best … no Bathing area best … No cleaning on average my thinking is Elgin stay expensive and not value for money.

Loved the experience of staying in a heritage property in heart of kolkata. The experience was worth every penny spent. My only wish is that the restaurant menu should have been more elaborate!

The stay was excellent. The property is a little tough around the edges but that part of the charm. Breakfast was an average affair with some variety with a dosa set up, but then they run and make the dosa in the back kitchen. The staff are attentive and desk manager attended all in a happy mood. The reason for 5 stars is the old world charm, balcony space, sitting room and classic dining hall.

Not sure the reason but slept 9 hours without any distraction. But for a single room value to the money is not justifying, looks full exhibition than stay, we respect the heritage property. Definitely worth to stay who will have time. Overall average for me.

Elgin fair-lawns is a beautiful 270 year old property. It is being refurbished and though modern amenities are being introduced, they haven’t let go of the old! the food served was delicious and the staff extremely courteous.

Elgin fairlawn breaks the thinking that good looking and good ambience place does not have good food and hospitality. This is a must visit place for a weekend getaway
