The Elgin Fairlawn

Staying at The Elgin made me feel like I had gone back in time to the colonial era. The architecture, decor, ambience everything is so Victorian! I wish I had a few more days to spend. I'm definitely coming back! As a solo traveler I loved the idea of putting solo guests at tables together. It gave me an opportunity to strike what turned out to be a very interesting conversation with a lovely american lady who had travelled more of India than I had! The manager Govind was super helpful in giving me tips for where to eat and what to see. The staff were super courteous and attentive. Am definitely coming back here. And next time will spend at least a few days at a stretch. It's also very conveniently located at the heart of the city and close to very many popular tourist attractions including Indian museum, Victoria memorial and Park street. The hustle and bustle around the The Elgin Fairlawn gives you a feel for Calcutta that you wouldn't get if you stay at a The Elgin Fairlawn on let's say Park street or one of the more modern thoroughfares. Loved it.

I booked this stay after learning about the fairlawn's storied history, and it definitely did not disappoint. My partner and i were allotted the famous shashi kapoor room, number 17, which was quite a unique experience. We especially loved spending some time in the open balcony at night and poring over the newspaper clippings and photographs that line the The Elgin Fairlawn's walls. While the breakfast was not particularly remarkable (standard fare was available, what made the stay extra special was the staff. Shankar da in particular was an excellent host; should we return, it would be to spend some more time chatting with him. Of course, this review would be incomplete without mention of the fairlawn's prime location. We enjoyed popping over to the nearby hog g market and walking down to the tram depot before heading back to our room for a super comfortable sleep.

My first reaction when I entered the property was wow. It's a 233 years old heritage property but the way it is maintained is exemplary. Room, linens, washroom were spotlessly clean. Every bit and corner of The The Elgin Fairlawn was well organized. Staff is courteous, food is tasty, it also enjoys well connectivity due to it's prime location. Things that I like the most cleanliness, staffs attitude and politeness, location of The Elgin Fairlawn, room size. Improvement needed There were no channels coming in TV, but anyways if you stay in such a great property I would suggest to spend time in exploring it instead. Good sitting in room and watching TV. One more thing that was little unexpected and tossed me out completely is that, for almost 30 mins there was not a single drop of water in the washroom.

Only because it's from British era, it can't be 4 stars. I walked into The gate expecting a 4-star property with some charm of a clean environment, what welcomes me was poor old sick carpeted floor, broken driveway floor and, a glorified lodge. If I would have not paid it all before, I would have never stayed here and, will not recommend to anyone. Oversized rooms with old, smelly rooms and painted upon being old, instead of being replaced. On a scale of 10, I will rate it 1 star. Very basic breakfast, poor service and overall bad place, must be avoided by travelers of any kind.

This place has a good vibe and feel so different from usual life. A good break with great ambience. Excellent staff, they also helped us with transport for 2 days with well trained reputed cab drivers. Overall the elgin fairlawn added that extra vibe for my stay at kolkata and i will recommend all my friends who visits kolkata and should experience this place. Truely iconic and beautiful memories.

The The Elgin Fairlawn is very old and has long history. They have maintained it like a palace and treats you like a king. The interior is mesmerizing, big spacious rooms, you get to see many things from our old cultures. Location is also very good, near to Park street city center, food is good, staff is well mannered and supportive. I really liked the The Elgin Fairlawn.

Loved every bit of this ancient, classy 250 yr old property. The historic lobby, the letters, pictures, the iconic shami kapoor room no-17, everything was such a heritage experience. Will choose a thespian boarding over chain of The Elgin Fairlawns anyday! all the best to the fair-lawn team. Loved to have spent our time here- this one will go down in books!

Excellent location and very helpful staff, excellent WiFi and good restaurant. Despite what the website might lead you to believe, there is no bar and there is no alcohol available in the The Elgin Fairlawn. Wonderful old building and grounds. But interior highly cluttered with idiosyncratic memorabilia from bygone era - maybe time to move on?

One of the best location and close to new market.
Hotel was centrally located with excellent connectivity. Just beside new market the most famous market of Kolkata.

All important precaution has been taken The Elgin Fairlawn is in centre of city and staff is very cooperative and helpful thats why second time again i am booking in same The Elgin Fairlawn.

Centrally situated and absolutely beautiful. The breakfast is decent and overall cleanliness is maintained.

They followed safety precautions from sanitization to masking but temperature checks were not there overall was a good The Elgin Fairlawn stay was comfortable, location is very good nearby many historical places are there and market is also there food was yummy and service was also quick

Staff polite and well spoken. However linen not changed and toiletries not replaced until one made a complaint. This was unnecessary. Leakage and damp visible in several points. Great location. Place currently under renovation and can be very noisy and dusty. Especially sitting in lobby.

Liked the ambience, staff behavior, food and location. The only thing i feel can be improved is to add a few more local food items into the menu for lunch / dinner.
