About Austrian Airlines

Austrian Airlines is Austria’s largest airline as well as flag carrier of Austria and is assumed to be a low cost air carrier. It is headquartered in the grounds of Vienna International Airport in Schwechat. It was established as Österreichische Luftverkehrs AG through the merger of Air Austria and Austrian Airways and began operations on 30 September 1957. The domestic service by this airline was launched on 1 May 1963 and it began transatlantic services on 1 April 1969 with a Vienna via Brussels to New York service in co-operation with Sabena.

The first Jet Airliner, “Sud Aviation Caravelle” was ordered by Austrian Airlines on 18 February 1963 and this Jet Airliner started to operate from 1973. Austrian Airlines started to standardize its fleet in a short period of time in favor of 9 Douglas DC-9-32. These Douglas serve for many years on short and medium-haul flights. In year 1977, it became the first Customer for the DC-9-80 (or McDonnell Douglas MD-80) along with Swissair.

Austrian Airlines was founded through the merger of Austrian Airways and Air Austria on September 30th, 1957. The first flight was made on March 31st, 1958, when Vickers Viscount 779 took off from Vienna for London, via Zurich. The airline commenced its domestic operations on May 1st, 1963, and with time, spread its services to the whole world, including United Arab Emirates. In 1969, it began its transatlantic services with flights to New York from Vienna. In 2000, it became the member of Star Alliance and also acquired Lauda Air in this year. On February 15th, 2001, it acquired Rheintalflug. The name of the airline was shortened to Austrian in September, 2003.
