About Mayotte (YT)
The French overseas department of Mayotte is a part of the Comoros archipelago on the Indian Ocean. It faces a tropical, maritime climate with the average annual temperature hardly dropping below 25°C. While there are only a few small towns and fishing villages, the tropical paradise is better known for its plantations, dive sites, beaches, hills, mangrove forests and incredible marine life. The village of Tsingoni houses the oldest mosque on the island and is close to the beautiful Lake Karihani – the only natural freshwater lake in the nation. N'Gouja beach is an iconic natural marvel of Mayotte. Apart from its calm waters, the beach is home to turtles, bats and friendly lemurs. Moya Beach is another seaside attraction where a large number of turtles nest. The beach is also close to Dziani Dzaha, a crater lake with turquoise waters. Mamoudzou, the capital, offers the best whale watching opportunity. Humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean near this seaside town, between July and October. On the other hand, the offshore M'Tsamboro Island is a popular dolphin-watching site all-round the year. For water adventure enthusiasts, the reserve of Passe en S features 13 diving sites. The most popular Mayotte’s delicacies include Kangué stew, Kakamoukou fish curry and Matsidza rice. These dishes are found everywhere on the island.
