Situated in the South Pacific Ocean, about 16000 km from France, Wallis and Futuna constitute a volcanic island group in the Polynesian region. Wallis is a low altitude island while Futuna has a relatively higher altitude. These islands feature a tropical marine climate with humid weather throughout the year. Wallis Island is part of a large lagoon dotted by 13 uninhabited coral islets. At its southwestern part lies Lake Lalolalo, a circular volcanic crater lake with turquoise waters and surrounded by green cliffs. The highest point on Wallis Island is Mount Lulu Fakahega, rising up to 145 metres above sea level. Wallis Island also presents a rich cultural heritage dating back to 800 BCE. A few kilometres from this city, the village of Mala'efo'ou houses the 19th century built St. Joseph Church. On Wallis Island, near Mata Utu, history buffs can also visit the historic Ruins of Talietumu. Futuna Island, with its diverse landscapes, lies about 200 km from Wallis Island. On this island, Mount Puke is the highest point with an altitude of 514 m above sea level. There are a few hiking trails that connect to it. Other points of interest include Poi Basilica and Anakele. The secluded island of Alofi, opposite this island, is famous for Loka Cave. Kava, a local beverage, is a must-try at the village of Ono, on the Futuna Island.
