About Bangkok Airways

Bangkok Airways was the first airline to become operational in Thailand under the name 'Sahakol Air'. The airline commenced its services in the year 1968, when it flew its first aircraft, Trade Wind, which was a nine-seater plane. The airline got orders for charter planes from various companies like OICC, USOM and others. Owing to the boom in tourism and business investment in the country, aviation industry gained prime importance. Bangkok Airways was formed to meet the increasing demands of the people and country’s economic growth. Back then, the schedule of Bangkok Airways flights covered Surin, Krabi and Korat. At present, the airline offers air tickets to major tourist destinations in Thailand across 20 different air routes. It also lets customers book flights at low air fare to international destinations like India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Bangkok Airways is also the owner of privately-operated airports at Trat, Sukhothai and Samui. These airports, maintained and developed by the Bangkok Airways, have provided the country with several aviation hubs that help in managing increasing air traffic. The airline also lets passengers book tickets to any destination with its online booking facility. Apart from booking online, travellers can also use the web check-in facility from where they can choose their seats as well.

Bangkok Airways was formed in the year 1968 as Sahakol Air. The airline began scheduled services in the year 1986 and became the first privately-owned domestic airline of Thailand. The airline re-branded in the year 1989 and changed their name to Bangkok Airways. 92.31% of the airline’s stake is owned by Dr. Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, 4.3% by Sahakol Estate, 1.2% by Bangkok Dusit Medical Services, and 2.1% by other shareholders. Its subsidiary airline Siem Reap Airways is wholly owned by the airline itself. Bangkok Airways built their own airport at Koh Samui and it was functional in April, 1989. The airline provided direct flights to Chiang Mai, Krabi, Hong Kong, Phuket, Pattaya and Singapore. The airline opened a second airport in 1996 at Sukhothai Province and a third airport in March 2003 in Trat Province. This initiative of the airline was to serve the blooming tourism destination of Ko Chang. The airline entered the jet world, with the inclusion of jet aircraft Boeing 717 in its fleet in the year 2000.
