Sohag, the ancient city in Egypt is also known as Sawhāj, Suhag and Suhaj and is situated on the western bank of the Nile river. Since 1960, the city has been the capital of the Sohag Governorate and is also included in Esna Governorate (nowadays Qena Governorate).
