Brussels Airlines was founded in 2002 when a group of investors at SN Airholding incorporated SN Brussels Airlines (SNBA). After SNBA merged with Virgin Express in March 2006, the airline was established under a new name, Brussels Airlines. Recognised as the national airline of Belgium, Brussels Airlines commenced its services in March 2007. In September 2008, Lufthansa Group acquired a 45% stake in the airlines. As a part of the deal, Brussels Airlines became the 26th member of the Star Alliance in December 2009. During the same time, the airlines started working on a new intra-African regional carrier called Korongo Airlines, based in Lubumbashi, which was launched later in April 2012. Backed by some 80 years of Belgian aeronautical experience, Brussels Airlines has today emerged as the largest airline in Belgium. Presently, the airline operates 300 daily flights to more than 60 international routes across European, African and American continents.
