About Sohag (HMB)

Sohag, the ancient city in Egypt is also known as Sawhāj, Suhag and Suhaj and is situated on the western bank of the Nile river. Since 1960, the city has been the capital of the Sohag Governorate and is also included in Esna Governorate (nowadays Qena Governorate). The city is situated in upper Egypt and is at a distance of approximately 470km from the capital city of Cairo. Sohag shares its borders with Assyut from the north, Red Sea from the west and Qena from the south. The city covers the area of 6546km² and is also a home for a large number of Egypt's administrative centres, villages, establishments and more. The Sohag Governorate comprises of popular Egyptian cities like Akhmim, Dar El Salam, Gerga and more and is among the most densely populated places in the Egypt region.

Dry weather and extremely rare spells of rainfall explain the weather conditions on Sohag, however, the place is well blesses with wide agricultural land and generates large amounts of wheat, cotton, rice and sugar cane.

How to Reach Sohag City

Things to do in Sohag
Because Sohag is a small city in the Sohag Governorate, it doesn't offer much to the tourists in terms of attractions and a day long visit would be enough to cover a handful of places of interest that Sohag has to offer, some of them are:

  • White Monastery: Sohag is primarily known for this famous White Monastery that has been inhabited by the Monks for centuries. The Monastery is dedicated to Shenouda the Archimandrite and its establishment is dated back to 442 AD.

  • Red Monastery: Situated at an approximate distance of 5km from the White Monastery, the Red Monastery is another masterpiece of Egyptian architecture that tourist can explore when in Sohag. The monastery dates back to the 4th century and is Coptic in nature just like the White Monastery. The monastery is named after an Egyptian sain christened Pishay nd its main nave is often regarded as cavernous in nature.

  • Sidi Arif Mosque: Also known as Nagaa Al Dear Al Abied Al Bahri - Nagaa Hamed, ADFA, the el-'Arif Mosque dates back to the 14th century and is a primary place for Sohag people to worship. The mosque has beautiful paired minarets and ornamentally decorated ceilings that make it an architectural beauty of the city.

  • El-Farshuti Mosque: When in Sohag, you can also consider visiting El-Farshuti mosque which is known for its high minarets reaching up to 53 metres.

  • The Church of the Holy Virgin: Situated close to the Sohag railway station, the Church of the Holy Virgin is a rather busy place to visit on Sundays. In terms of architecture, the church also boasts off ornamental walls and ceilings with beautiful hand paintings all over its walls.

  • A little drive to the southwest of Sohag city will take you large archaeological site known as Athribis, where the temple of Repyt is built by Ptolemy XV Caesarion.
