Decoding the PNR number

You must be thinking about what a PNR number represents and what information is stored in it. Let us decode what and how a PNR number is provided by the IRCTC ticket booking system.

  • The first 3 digits in the PNR number refers to PRS (Passenger Reservation System) which indicates the station or the railway zone where the code is generated and the ticket has been booked. The first number is the zonal code that means from which zone the train is departing or the starting station of the train.
  • The second and third digit are the PRS centers.
  • The rest of the seven digits are randomly generated which does not provide any useful information but it’s simply for the purpose of providing a unique PNR number.

Types of IRCTC PNR Status

When you receive your PNR number you also receive a PNR status. There are many PNR status provided by the Indian Railways. Each defines the status of your train ticket bookings. Here's what some of the abbreviations stands for:

  • CNF: If you got this on your PNR status, it means that your ticket is confirmed.
  • CAN: It means your ticket is canceled.
  • WL: WL stands for Waiting List. It means that your ticket will only get confirmed if a passenger travelling via the same train decides to cancel his/her ticket.
  • RAC: It stands for Reservation Against Cancellation. It means your reservation is confirmed and you may board the train but the berth has to be shared between passengers and split into two seats. If the confirmed passenger does not board the train, a full berth is allotted to the passenger with a RAC ticket.
  • GNWL: It stands for General Waiting List which is a type of waitlist quota on tickets. The probability of this ticket getting confirmed is very high.
  • PQWL: Pooled quota waiting list status means that if a passenger is traveling between any intermediate stations or from the starting station to the immediate next stop. The chances of confirmation are quite less in this case.
  • RLWL: Indian Railways issues train tickets to passengers traveling between the originating station and the terminating station. It is issued to travelers for an intermediate railway station known as Remote Location Waiting List.
  • TQWL: This PNR status means Tatkal Quota Waiting List and is issued for tatkal tickets. Unlike GNWL, this ticket gets directly confirmed and does not go through RAC status. A tatkal waitlist is less likely to get confirmed in IRCTC ticket booking system, as during the chart preparation, GNWL is preferred over TQWL.
  • NOSB: This PNR status stands for No Seat Berth for half fare. It means that the children under the age of 5 to 12 can board the train but no seat will be allotted.

Validity of a PNR Number

A PNR number is issued when a ticket is booked by a passenger or for a group of a maximum of 6 passengers. It is valid until the date of departure or train cancellation. The PNR number is valid for 9 months and the same PNR number can be generated after a year.

When you book train tickets and get your PNR train status as Waitlist, you may wonder whether your ticket will get confirmed or not.
