Soak in the serene ambience of the Buddhist monasteries or Gompas in Kalimpong

About 4,000 feet above sea level and surrounded by towering mountains, the North Eastern destination of Kalimpong has just the kind of mystique that forms the perfect backdrop to a brewing romance! It is peaceful, idyllic and famous for its flowers – especially orchids, amaryllis, roses, dahlias and gladioli. Enjoy these romantic blooms on a visit to Kalimpong’s splendid nurseries, or go to Darpin Dara for grand views of the plains, and the Teesta and Reang rivers for a picnic. Later, indulge at the bakeries and spend some quiet time amidst the tranquil surroundings of the three important Gompas (monasteries) in the neighbourhood.

2. Darjeeling, West Bengal

Your trip to Darjeeling is incomplete without a visit to the beautiful tea gardens

Whether by heritage toy train or road, the journey from Bagdogra airport / New Jalpaiguri station takes you through gently undulating tea gardens, in myriad shades of green, before the steep climb via Kharseong and Ghoom, and finally descends to the  “abode of the thunder dragon”. Darjeeling was amongst the first and foremost hill stations of the British Raj and still retains many splendid attractions – including the Natural History Museum for wildlife and Everest Museum (of Tenzing fame).  Your trip here is incomplete without a visit to a tea estate, Happy Valley being the closest. Take in those magical sunsets from the Observatory Hill (sight of the twin peaks of the Kanchenjunga), visit Tiger Hill for panoramic views of Mt. Everest and spend quality time in the arms of nature at Senchal Lake.

3. Gangtok, Sikkim

A generation ago Kathmandu used to be a popular honeymoon destination. However, now that Gangtok has its own casino, it offers all the ingredients that Kathmandu did, against the backdrop of natural beauty. Sightseeing in the city should include meandering up to Tsuklakhang Royal Chapel and Monastery via  Deer Park (modelled on Sarnath), as well as visiting the Secretariat and the absolutely unique Orchid Sanctuary with its 600 species of orchids. Shop for honeymoon keepsakes at the Old and Naya Bazaars or the venerable Cottage Industries for bargains on the famous Sikkimese carpets, thangka wall drapes, shirts, boots, fur articles and wood carvings. Don't leave Gangtok without visiting the gorgeous Tshangu Lake. A two-hour drive from the city, the lake is a major tourist attraction and is a photographer's delight! Yumthang Valley, located about 150 kms from Gangtok is also known as the "Valley of Flowers", and has over 24 species of Rhododendron flowers. From the lush green meadows to the cascading waterfalls and streams, Yumthang is a nature lover's delight.
