Want To Go ?

If I tell you that there’s actually a place where you can come face-to-face with a Yeti, would you believe me? Well, to digest this, you’ll have to visit Bhutan, possibly one of the very few places in the world with an active Yeti legend and even a stamp in its honour!

Since high school, I really wanted to visit Bhutan for its culture and ideologies. When I finally got a chance to venture to Bhutan, I discovered that the place held endless surprises in store. Here are 6 facts about Bhutan that you probably didn’t know:

1.Bhutan gets regular ferocious storms coming down from the Himalayas. Hence the name-‘The land of the Thunder Dragon’.

2.The highest point in Bhutan is Gangkhar Puensum (about 24,836 feet from the ground), which translates to White Peak of the Three Spiritual Brothers. This is the only unclaimed mountain in the world, since climbing higher than 6,000 meters is banned due to the spiritual beliefs of the locals.

3.The Government of Bhutan is focused on preserving their heritage and moderates the number of tourists at any given time in the country. Tourists traveling to Bhutan have to be accompanied by a tour guide/operator and spend a minimum of $250 per day during their travels.

4.Both the national flower- Blue Poppy (Meconopsis) and the national animal of Bhutan- Takin, are exotic species. Takin is a weird looking animal, resembling both a cow and a goat and can only be found in Bhutan and some parts of China.

5.Bhutanese cuisine is full of spices and milk products-unlike the other Asian countries. Cheese, milk and butter are vital elements of their diet.

6.Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan does not have any traffic lights. Instead there are traffic officers moderating traffic across the city. The locals believe that this personal gesture promotes the feeling of community.

There is an unending list of reasons why you should pack your bags to visit this beautiful yet unexplored country today (some more quirky than these). Don’t wait! Make your plans and head to Bhutan, the last Shangri-La of the World.
