An 11-Day Itinerary For Southern New Zealand!

Having the distinction of being Hollywood’s choicest location for the setting of famous fairy tales, New Zealand is home to awe-inspiring vistas and stunning landscapes with a vibrant culture dating back millennia.

Here’s a short itinerary to make the most of what this country has in store for you.

 

Day 1: Christchurch

Start your trip from Christchurch—a charming city known for its colonial history and architecture. Stroll through the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, where you'll discover a wide array of plants, trees, and flowers from around the world. Next, immerse yourself in human history and culture at the Canterbury Museum.
You'll also find the famous Christchurch Cathedral nearby, though currently under reconstruction. End your day with a relaxing punt ride on the tranquil Avon River, which flows through the heart of the city.

 

Day 2: Akaroa

Located approximately 1.5 hours from Christchurch, Akaroa—the quaint French-inspired village is your next destination easily reachable by car or bus. To experience the marine life, take a harbour cruise, and try to spot the world's smallest and rarest dolphin, the Hector's dolphin.
You can also rent a kayak to explore the surrounding waters at your own pace. Be sure to visit the Giant's House—a whimsical art and sculpture garden that is one of Akaroa's most unusual attractions and will remind you of your happy childhood memories.

 

Day 3: Christchurch to Moana to Hokitika

As the sun begins to rise over Christchurch, pack your bags and set off on your next adventure towards the wild and wonderful West Coast. It’s best you rent a car & head towards Moana and then Hokitika. Driving along State Highway 73, the stunning natural beauty of Arthur's Pass National Park unfolds before you. Take your time, stop often to admire the serene environs and do not miss having a hearty lunch at a local café by Lake Brunner.

Then head towards Hokitika (just 45 mins away) and stop at the scenic Hokitika Gorge along the way. The gorge boasts stunning turquoise water and is surrounded by lush native forest, making for some truly stunning photo opportunities. Finish your day with dinner at one of the fantastic local eateries in Hokitika. Whether you're in the mood for fresh seafood, international cuisine, or classic pub fare, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

 

Day 4: The West Coast & Punakaiki

Start your day with a delicious breakfast in Hokitika before hitting the road to Punakaiki. On the way, stop at the scenic Hokitika Beach to collect some of the famous Hokitika driftwood and take some memorable photos.

Continue your journey along the stunning West Coast, stopping at the iconic Pancake Rocks and Blowholes at Punakaiki. Afterward, head to the nearby Paparoa National Park, where you can take a hike through the lush forest and admire the breath-taking scenery. Also visit to the Punakaiki Cavern, & explore underground rivers, waterfalls, and glow worms for an immersive experience.

In the evening, check into your accommodation in Punakaiki, and enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the town's many fantastic restaurants.

 

Day 5: Nelson 

Check out of your accommodation and hit the road towards Nelson, a scenic coastal drive that takes about 4 hours. Along the way, stop at the Buller Gorge Swing Bridge Adventure for an adrenaline-pumping experience.

For lunch, stop at the charming town of Murchison, known for its outdoor recreation opportunities and friendly locals.
Continue your drive to Nelson, known for its arts and crafts scene, beautiful beaches, and more. Head to your accommodation before taking a stroll around the town's historic streets, browsing the many art galleries and boutiques.

 

Day 6: Nelson

Start your day with a visit to the Founder’s Heritage Park, a living museum that showcases the history of Nelson and New Zealand. Take a ride on the vintage train or try your hand at traditional crafts such as blacksmithing and pottery. For lunch, head to the bustling Nelson Market, held every Saturday morning in Montgomery Square. Browse the many stalls selling fresh produce, artisanal foods and handmade crafts.
Later head to Tahunanui or Cable Bay, for a refreshing swim or relaxing sunbathing and visit the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts, a performance venue. Alternatively, check out one of Nelson's pubs or bars for some live music and a nightcap.

 

Day 7: Nelson to Blenheim

The heart of New Zealand's wine country—Blenheim is your next destination, about 1.5 hours from Nelson. Once in Blenheim, head straight to the many vineyards that surround the town.
Start with Cloudy Bay and then explore some of the other nearby vineyards such as Wairau River Wines, Saint Clair Family Estate, and Allan Scott Wines. For lunch, try some of the local cuisine at one of the wineries or head to downtown Blenheim for some more options. In the evening, head back to downtown Blenheim for some live music and entertainment at the Clubs of Marlborough.

 

Day 8: Outdoor adventures in Marlborough

After breakfast, head to the Marlborough Sounds for some outdoor adventure. Take a scenic cruise through the sounds or rent a kayak and explore the coastline on your own. You can also go hiking or mountain biking in the nearby hills and valleys. Oh! And do not forget to sample some fresh seafood at the restaurants in Havelock.
In the afternoon, opt for a sightseeing tour and visit the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre or the Marlborough Museum. In the evening, head back to Blenheim for dinner accompanied with some more local wine for a memorable culinary experience.

 

Day 9: Kaikoura

Start your day by heading north towards Kaikoura. The drive takes around 1.5 hours and offers magnificent views of the coastline and mountains. Along the way, make a stop at the Ward Beach Fossil Museum, which showcases a range of fascinating fossils from the region.

Once you arrive in Kaikoura, head to the Kaikoura Museum to learn about the region's history and culture. Later you can go on a whale watching tour as well!

 

Day 10: Kaikoura & Back to Christchurch

Take a scenic walk along the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway. This walking trail offers stunning views of the coastline and the surrounding mountains. You can also see a range of marine life, including seals, dolphins, and whales.

After breakfast, make your way south towards Christchurch for around 2.5 hours. The drive offers heavenly views of the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps. Along the way, make a stop at the Waipara Valley Wine Region. Take a wine tour or visit one of the many wineries for a taste of pinot noir and riesling.

 

Day 11: Christchurch

Early in the morning, visit the Christchurch Farmers' Market for a hearty breakfast. This weekly market is held on Saturday mornings and features a range of fresh produce, baked goods, and artisanal products.
