SURPRISE ME!
Australians have a reputation for having a good time, so it is no surprise that there is plenty do when the sun goes down. Whether you enjoy music, having a drink or just some culture, you will find plenty to do each evening in Australia.
Australia has a vibrant music scene were you can see a wide range of local or international acts at large or small venues. If you want to hear some local music, why not pick up the paper where you are staying and check out the Gig Guide or perhaps pick up a copy of Time Out magazine for the city you are visiting. If you like Jazz, try Bennett’s Lane in Melbourne or The Basement in Sydney, where you will be able to sit down and enjoy the music with an audience of enthusiasts.
For a slightly younger crowd, why not try The Esplanade Hotel in Melbourne or The Oxford Art Factory in Sydney. You may not get a seat, but it won’t matter as you will be too busy dancing near the stage. These venues are still small enough to get close to the musicians, making it a great way to see live music.
If you want to see some larger or international acts, there are also bigger venues that host special tours, such as the Rod Laver Arena, and sometimes even the MCG, in Melbourne or Allphones Arena in Sydney. Here, people like Beyonce and Bon Jovi have played, so you never know who you may be able to see. You can always book tickets online in advance to big events like these through trusted ticketing websites
If you prefer classical music, there are also some great concert venues where you can find world class symphony orchestras, opera and even string quartets playing. In Melbourne, the Melbourne Concert Hall is the premier venue and for Sydney, you simply cannot go past the Opera House. Here, you will usually find an older crowd, and you can even dress up a little which is always fun.
Treading the Boards
If you like seeing live theatre, there are many different venues that have large and small productions. One of the best theatre groups to see in Melbourne is the Melbourne Theatre Company which performs primarily at the Arts Centre. You can also take a look at venues like the Princess Theatre and Regent Theatre where large stage productions such as the Phantom of the Opera and Wicked have been performed. In Sydney, try the Sydney Theatre Company which has Cate Blanchett as its Artistic Director, and a broad range of productions with world famous actors such as Hugo Weaving.
Dance enthusiasts are not forgotten either, with The Australian Ballet performing regularly in all the major cities of Australia. If you are interested in seeing some Aboriginal performances, The Bangarra Dance Theatre is an excellent production house that performs in the major cities throughout the year
Hanging Out with the Locals
If you just want to relax and have a drink in the evening, there are a many venues that you can choose from. The “pub” is one those quintessential Australian experiences, which is generally just a bar that you can visit. You will find all sorts of people frequenting pubs in Australia, varying from students to those well into their twilight years, the audience varies depending upon the location and its reputation. The best way to see if a pub is for you is to just walk in and take a quick look around; entry is usually.
One of the most iconic pubs to visit in Melbourne is the Young and Jackson’s, which is in a lovely heritage building right opposite Flinders Street Station. In Sydney, try the Tilbury Hotel in Woolloomooloo, which is another great pub to enjoy a drink and perhaps meet some interesting new people.
Lounge bars and night clubs are also quite popular, and are usually open later in the evening. They are usually a little more up-market, so it’s a good excuse to dress up for a night on the town. There are lots of little bars around the major cities, it is perhaps best to ask at your hotel for some of the best ones nearby.
If you are heading out for a night on the town, it is worth knowing that the legal age for drinking in Australia is 18 years of age, and you may be required to show proof of age, so it is best to take your passport with you. Pubs are usually open until at least 1 a.m., with bars and nightclubs usually open until 3 a.m. or even 5 a.m. in some instances. So prepare yourself for a big night out on the town!
