Tareef karun kya uski, jisne tumhe banaaya”

Fitting words indeed for Sharmila Tagore’s beauty, but perhaps we could suggest a destination for the phrase—Kashmir.

The love affair between Bollywood and Kashmir is unending. From Sharmila Tagore to Alia Bhatt, Shammi Kapoor to Shah Rukh Khan, we have seen them all romancing in the beautiful backdrop of Kashmir. Despite the obstacles and those minor speed bumps, Bollywood directors have been true to their love for Kashmir. Such is their affection for this ‘paradise on earth’ that even after the devastating floods a couple of months back, shooting at many Kashmir locations has resumed. If you haven’t been to this breathtaking destination so far we bring you a glimpse of Kashmir through the silver screen.

When Shammi Kapoor Introduced Us to Dal Lake in Kashmir Ki Kali

We all remember Shammi Kapoor romancing Sharmila Tagore on a shikara in the movie Kashmir Ki Kali. Yes, it is always difficult to decide what to admire most, Sharmila or the beauty of Dal lake. Moving to present day, the latest hit on the Internet is a pre-release romantic shot of Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapoor in Nishat Bagh for their upcoming movie Fitoor. Srinagar has many captivating locations like Pari Mahal, the three Mughal Gardens (Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi) and Tulip Garden to name a few.

Remember the Scenic Valleys from Silsila?

The green meadows, tall mountains and a river running through offer the best locations one can ask for. We have seen the serene Pahalgam in movies like Silsila, Jab Jab Phool Khile and many others. However, what has immortalised Pahalgam is the quaint Betaab Valley, named after the Sunny Deol starrer Betaab. In fact, some of the most admired love triangles in Bollywood history were shot in the valley. There is no denying that the place was a favourite with legendary director Yash Chopra, and soon others like, Imtiaz Ali and Ayan Mukerji followed suit with movies such as Highway and Yeh Jawaanj Hai Deewani.

The beauty of Gulmarg has been explicitly shown in films like Bobby, Haider, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Aap Ki Kasam. We all remember the famous Bobby Hut, named after the Dimple Kapadia-Rishi Kapoor starrer Bobby. Not to forget the trekking scene in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, starring Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor at the world-famous ski resort in Gulmarg. Recently, the Saif-Katrina starrer, Phantom, directed by Kabir Khan was shot here and is based on the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and global terrorism.

Away from the Chinar trees and green meadows, Ladakh woos travellers with its vast cold desert and sapphire-blue lakes. Though, initially directors were glued to Srinagar, in recent times we’ve seen many movies being shot in Ladakh. Looking for Rancho (Aamir Khan) in the movie 3 Idiots opened a world of discovery for those who were new to the captivating beauty of Ladakh. And if you’ve seen the Milkha Singh biopic, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, you would remember the song Zinda where Farhan Akhtar undergoes intense training in this high altitude location.
