As the temperature rises, there is no better time to head overseas. While there are hundreds of destinations around the world that we all would like to travel to once in our lifetime, there are some which you just have to visit. The rich history and heritage, awe-inspiring architecture, fascinating cultures and the great variety of things to do, make these destinations ideal holiday spots.

We present to you five of our favourite holiday destinations for the summer holidays this year:

Prague

The capital of the Czech Republic, Prague is a city for artists, historians and lovers. From the historic Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square to the famous Charles Bridge, just wandering through the cobblestoned streets of this old town is pure joy. Also the home of Bohemia, you can also visit a number of museums in Prague, or leave your mark on the Lennon Wall. Sit back in one of the cafes with a cool Czech beer and soak in the European atmosphere.

Jerusalem

Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world and a must-see for anyone with an interest in history, culture or religion. Attracting millions of pilgrims and visitors each year, the heart of the city is held within the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. Divided into four quarters, Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Armenian, each quarter has its own unique feel. Leave a prayer at the Western Wall, marvel at the intricate work on the walls of the Dome of the Rock, or even walk on the footsteps of Jesus in the Dolorosa Walk.  Don’t forget to grab a falafel from the famous stall just inside Damascus gate when you get hungry!

Istanbul

The capital of the Ottoman Empire for over five centuries, Istanbul is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world.  Situated on the Bosphorus Strait, this city brings together the best of East and West in perfect harmony and is a great place for a family vacation. From the stunning Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia that dominate the skyline of the old city, to the modern boutiques that line Istiklal Avenue; there is no shortage of things to see and do in Istanbul. If you want to pick up a bargain, then head to the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest markets in the world. Here, you can pick up a Turkish carpet or some handmade jewellery, but don’t forget to haggle hard!

Budapest

Known as the Paris of the East, the capital of Hungary is as much a romantic escape as it is a treat for history and architecture buffs.  Head underground and explore the labyrinth of caves and tunnels below Buda Castle that have been used for hundreds of years by painters and those seeking refuge, alike. Above ground, relax in one of the natural thermal baths or pools and soak away all your troubles. At the end of the day, take a cruise along the Danube or just sit on its banks and watch the world go by as you hold hands.

Phuket

Whilst the monsoon takes over most of Asia, Phuket is sheltered during the summer, making it the perfect place to have a beach vacation. There is plenty of fun in the sun for the whole family here, from snorkelling to windsurfing or just reading a book by the pool. For something a bit different, take the family to Phang Nga Bay for a day trip to enjoy the stunning cliffs and turquoise waters or head into Old Phuket town to explore the Chinese architecture of an era gone by.
