For me a relaxing vacation has to include a wide expanse of the sea, a great resort which offers relaxing spa experiences and of course delectable seafood. So this time, I decided to ditch the typical Koh Samui and Pattaya type of vacations and headed straight to the islands of Bintan and Batam in Indonesia. The islands located on the archipelago on Riau in Indonesia are every beach bum’s delight.

My first stop was Batam, located very close to Singapore and a welcome break from the concrete jungle and rigmarole of city life.

The best Water Sports in Batam

Whether you set off on your canoe in the expansive sea or just witness the underwater world in its myriad hues as you go snorkelling, Batam won’t let you down. You can also try jet skiing, waterboarding, banana boat rides, wakeboarding and hoverboarding while you’re here.

The Batam Cable Ski Park is the place if you are looking to set your adrenaline rushing with amazing water sports. Other recommended clubs that organise water sports here are Turi Beach Resort Cabana Club, Batam View Beach Resort and Pura Jaya Beach Resort.

Sunset at Barelang Bridge

The next day I decided to head to the Barelang Bridge, known for offering stunning views of the setting sun. The bridge is an engineering marvel majestically spanning the water and connecting Batam Island with Galang Island. I probably took some of the best pictures at this spot.

Scuba Diving

Even though I have done scuba diving many times before, it’s one thing I can’t resist from doing again and again. Batam offers some of the best diving spots and brings you up close and personal to the beautiful marine life. You’ll be able to spot pristine coral reefs, stingray, clownfish (fondly referred to as ‘nemo’, parrotfish and angelfish!

Recommended places to go scuba diving in Batam: Abang Island (the most popular option, as it is surrounded by small islands around), Petong Island, Hantu Island, Labun Island.

On your visit to these islands, you’ll be able to spot multiple tour operators which can organise dives for you. We recommend you take proper training and keep a day aside for diving, as it can take a couple of hours.

After four days of absolute fun, it was time to bid adieu to the beautiful island and continue my onward vacation to the Bintan Island. The largest island in the Riau islands province, Bintan was mesmeric from the moment I set foot.

Relaxing massage at Club Med

After checking-in, the first thing I did was enroll myself for a three day spa experience at the Spa at Club Med resort. The herb infused treatments transported my city-tired soul into a world of absolute bliss and relaxation.

All Terrain Vehicle ride

My friends who had been to Bintan recently had heavily recommended that I take the ATV ride to experience the rugged terrain of Bintan differently. Being an adventure junkie, this was not a chance I was going to miss. This experience of riding in an open motorized buggy was a truly memorable one.

My open cockpit flight

I reserved my last day at Bintan for an open cockpit flight with Air Adventures Flying Club. And I must admit, it offered spectacular views of the long white beachy stretches and sparkling ocean waters. It was a slightly expensive affair but worth every penny.

After having soaked up the sun in stunning environs and having enjoyed delectable food, it was finally time to head back home. But I promised Indonesia, to come back again for more.

How to reach:

The most convenient way to get to both Bintan and Batam islands in Indonesia is to fly into Singapore from any major city in India. There are ferries that leave from Harbourfront and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal (10mins away from Changi Airport) several times daily.

Tip: Book in advance to avoid long queues, especially on weekends.
