SURPRISE ME!
Gujarat has a platter full of popular tourist destinations like Gir National Park, Rann of Kutch, Somnath Temple and Laxmi Vilas Palace among others. However, there are also a few unexplored destinations in the state which are now easily accessible to travellers, only because of a new initiative by the Government of India called UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik).
One such place is Kandla, also famously known as the Kandla Port located on the Gulf of Kutch on the north-western coast of India. Thanks to UDAN, you can now visit this untouched destination with non-stop flights from Mumbai. So if you’ve had your fill of the popular attractions in Gujarat, head to Kandla! Scroll down to make the most of your trip.
Yes, Kandla Port is the largest port of India in terms of volume of cargo handled and this makes it the number one reason to visit the magnificent seaport on your next vacation. With the participation of both public and private sector units, the port is always gearing up to add substantial stock. You will be amused to know that the west coast port handled 72,225 million tonnes of cargo in 2008-09, which is 11% more than the 64,920 million tonnes handled in 2007-08.
Fun Fact: The seaport is 256 nautical miles southeast of the Port of Karachi in Pakistan and over 430 nautical miles north-northwest of the Port of Mumbai.
What if we tell you can actually get to see all the action on the port? Yes, with all the appropriate permissions in your pocket, you can get close to the sight of mammoth sized ships parked at the port and huge hydraulic cranes taking out the containers. This makes it another excellent reason to visit Kandla on your next vacation.
Kandla, apart from its port, is also known for the nearby locations and one of them is Gandhidham. When visiting Kandla, you must not miss the warmth of culture Gandhidham offers. The Bhadreshwar Jain Temple here is a must visit—admire the unique architecture of one of the oldest Jain temples in the country with your friends or family.
The salt desert of Kutch is a nature’s masterpiece and attending the world famous Rann Utsav here is something every traveller on this planet aspires for. Luckily, the place is only 3 hours from Kandla and therefore, the magnificent experience must reserve a place in your itinerary.
Located only half-an-hour from Kandla, a small port town Adipur near Gandhidham houses a hidden gem in the form of a Gandhi Samadhi. Interestingly, after Rajghat in Delhi, it is the only place in the country which has Gandhi’s sacred remains. Pay respect to the Father of the Nation and you can also stroll in the lush green lawns or bask in the tranquillity the place offers.
