Trivia

Reunion Island is a French overseas region.

A well-kept secret in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, Reunion Island is a tropical haven with remarkable natural beauty. Showcasing an abundance of flora and fauna along with mountains, beaches and volcanoes, the island is also a multi-cultural treasure trove with Indian, European and African influences. So if you are looking for a relaxing vacay in a unique destination, Reunion Island is your best bet! Here are five places you must visit in Reunion Island that will surely take your breath away!

Piton de la Fournaise

Formed over half a million years ago and at a height of 2,632 metres, Piton de la Fournaise, located in Réunion National Park, is the most active volcano on the planet. Categorized as an ‘shield’ volcano, the spectacle when the lava fountains gush upwards is a brilliant show. Drawing visitors from far and near, there are several safe viewing points near the volcano where you can watch from.

Trou de Fer

With the Bras de Caverne River flowing through its gorge, Trou de Fer is a picturesque canyon on Reunion Island. Comprising a large crater fed by six waterfalls and a narrow slot canyon, a day hike at Trou de Fer is the perfect way to admire the surrounding beauty. A helicopter service is also available that gives you a fabulous bird’s-eye view of the jade green forested expanse and opal white waterfalls.

Piton des Neiges

Translated as ‘snow peak’, Piton des Neiges is the highest point on Reunion Island at 3,069 metres. An eroded volcano for over 25,000 years, the lower slopes of Piton des Neiges are a natural biological reserve. Starting from Cilaos, it takes a challenging 10-hour trek to get to the top of the mountain. However, along the way and from up there, the stunning scenery is incomparable and well worth traversing steep rocks and pathways!

Piton Maïdo

Overlooking the city of Saint Paul, the volcanic peak, Piton Maïdo, towers at 2,205 metres. Serpentine trails through forests of indigenous vegetation lead to the top of Piton Maïdo from where 360-degree panoramic views of Cirque de Mafate are a magical reward for all your effort.

Cirque de Mafate

One of Reunion Island’s more popular hiking sites is Cirque de Mafate, a caldera caused over time as a result of volcanic magma excavation. Surrounded by mountains and cliffs, Cirque de Mafate houses the village of La Nouvelle. Interestingly, despite of not having any roads, the village has some provision stores and eateries.
