Day 1: Explore the Capital, Port Louis

Day 2: Try out Adventures at Port Louis

Hiking: Plan a trek to Le Pouce, the thumb shaped mountain. It stretches over 3500 m, and anyone with a good physique can do it. Finish in Moka, taking in spectacular views of the green island all along.

Swimming with dolphins: This has to be the most enthralling experience in Mauritius. Learn to dive, try game fishing or simply go on a sunset cruise on a Catamaran.

Day 3: Rough it out at Rodrigues, Mascarene Islands

Caving and other sports: From kayaking trips and mountain hikes to skydiving and kite-surfing, this autonomous island east of Mauritius has it all. Hike the central Mont Limon for panoramic views or dive among intricate coral reefs. Take a guided tour of Caverne Patate to see the various rock formations that were created by tectonic plate movements. Also see the François Leguat Tortoise and Cave Reserve.

Day 4: Enjoy the Beaches in West and Southwest Mauritius

Flic en Flac is a popular location for weekend beach activities like swimming and snorkelling. It also has a range of bungalows for rent, restaurants and a buzzing nightlife.

Day 5: Revel in the Natural Wonders of Mauritius

Nature reserves: Visit Trou aux Cerf, a massive crater of an extinct volcano. Next, see the Grand Basin Lake or Ganga Talao with a shrine to Lord Shiva. Head to the Black River Gorges Natural Park, a marvellous reserve full of wildlife and native flora and home to the Alexandra Falls. Don’t forget to put Chamarel on your itinerary. It’s famous for its seven coloured earth and waterfalls. Also check out Rhumerie de Chamarel, a distillery that makes Mauritius' native rum from its own sugar cane farmed on nearby fields.

Cuisine: Eat a Creole meal at Eureka — a restored colonial home that takes pride in serving the best Mauritian food.

Day 6: Have a Fun-Packed Day in North Mauritius

Botanical gardens: Visit the SSR Botanical Gardens with their giant Victoria Amazonica water lilies and abundant birdlife. Shop for handicraft items like ship and aircraft models, paintings and jewellery.

Adventure activities: Take a biking tour in the village of Goodlands, participate in a tandem skydive from 10,000 ft above Cap Malheureux or go kitesurfing in Le Morne. Some of the most beautiful golf courses are also found here. The island’s most popular dive spots are Gunner's Coin, Whale Rock, Holt's Rocks and Pointe aux Piments. Don’t forget your waterproof camera! Other ways to explore the ocean is a trip in the Blue Safari submarine or an underwater scooter. You can pre-book with a diving school on Pereybere Beach.

Nightlife: If you want to mingle with the locals, there’s nowhere better than Grand Bay! Just follow the coastline at night and discover the various clubs, bars, lounges and billiard halls.

Day 7: Cosy up With Nature in South and Southeast Mauritius

Fishing villages: Visit Mahebourg, the ancient capital in the island’s sleepy southeast region with its fishing villages. See the spectacular Le Souffleur, a 30 m geyser at high tide, or go snorkelling in a glass bottom boat at the Blue Bay Marine Park to watch trumpet fish and baby barracudas swim by. The Rochester Falls off Souillac are worth a visit, where you can find green crystals formed in the volcanic soil. Spot pink pigeons and giant tortoise at the Ile aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve. The Mahebourg market is a shopping hub with spices, clothes, toys and traditional food like biryani and gateaux piments.

Eco tents: Go glamping at the Grand River South East. Journey through verdant hills to the Bois Teri Tea Factory, see giant tortoises and crocodiles at Le Vanille Nature Park, and then continue to the historical Saint Aubin Sugar Estate.
