For your next holiday, ditch fancy resorts and get back to the basics at these top organic farm stays from across the country.

1. Surjivan, Gurgaon

Offering respite from the buzz of Delhi/NCR, the Surjivan Resort is THE destination for your date with the rustic way of life. A vast expanse of lush greens dotted with aesthetically done-up earthy accommodation awaits you at this exclusive farm stay. The thatched roof cottages appear as if straight out of a village setting, but the interiors are modern, with all necessary amenities, to ensure that you have a comfortable stay. The place offers an eclectic mix of traditional Indian games like pitthoo, kanche, gilli-danda and lattoo along with modern sports like cricket and badminton. There’s a swimming pool on the premises, and the place also arranges farm tours for guests and educational activities for kids. Authentic Indian delicacies on the menu are prepared from purely organic ingredients and cooked the traditional way.

2. Jor Ki Dhani, Sikar, Rajasthan

The Jor Ki Dhani, spread over 15 acres of land near Nawalgarh in Shekhawati, recreates the rustic charm of life in rural Rajasthan. The huts dotting the property are made from mud bricks, finished with a cow dung wash. The place is as popular for its ambience as it is for the delectable spread of Rajasthani food comprising a mix of pearl millet, wheat and barley rotis served with vegetables, pulses and jiggery served in a traditional low seating setting. Then there is farm-fresh milk, buttermilk, curd, butter and ghee to compliment your meals. The facility is a fertilizer-free zone and the cultivation on the farm is nourished by jivamirt or organic nectar, which is a mix of cow dung and urine. The farm is also home to three horses, three dogs and fifteen cows. Besides being given tours of the property and interacting with the animals, guests can also visit pottery kilns that specialize in making clay chillums, lac bangle workshops, ruins of Buddhist temples and the historic site of Lohargal in the vicinity.

Location: Sikar–Hardyalpura road, 18 km from Nawalgarh and 10 km from Sikar.

How to Reach: You can take a train to Sikar and hire a taxi to reach the farmhouse.

3. Bon Farmhouse, Sikkim

4. Harvest Fresh Farms, Kerala

Situated in the tranquil Cumbum Valley, this farm stay is known for its verdant environs and organic fruit farms. 5. Prakriti Farms, Rupnagar, Punjab

Prakriti Farms, a non-profit organic farm in Rupnagar near Chandigarh is part of the eco conservation initiatives by Netar Pal Kaushal. The focus of the delightful farm stay destination is on recreating an ecological environment on a piece ancestral land to counter the growing disrespect for nature. 6. Farm of Happiness, Maharashtra

The earthy vibes of a traditional Konkani house, sumptuous home-cooked meals made from organic produce, a vast expanse of greens and tranquil air – if that’s the kind of experience you are looking for, the Farm of Happiness or Ananadache Shet is the place to be.
