RELIGIOUS
Celebrated as the ancient kingdom of Lord Krishna, the historic city of Dwarka is one of the most popular and revered Krishna pilgrimages in India. It is one of the famous Char Dhams—the four sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites—and is visited by lakhs of pilgrims every year. Set along the Arabian Sea in Gujarat, this sacred city is also one of the Sapta Puri, the seven most ancient religious cities of India.
Besides its religious and historical significance, Dwarka is now a popular holiday destination for its impressive architecture, serene beaches and fabulous views.
To help you make the most of your Dwarka visit, here is a list of notable places and must-see sites in this holy city:
The most prominent shrine of Dwarka, this landmark Hindu temple is also known as Jagat Mandir or ‘Temple of the world’. Dedicated to Lord Krishna, it features the Chalukya style of architecture—an elaborate five-storied main shrine supported by 60 columns and ornate carvings on the exterior. This 2500-year old temple also has shrines dedicated to Subhadra, Balarama and Revathy, Vasudeva, Rukmini and others. The DwarkaPeeth or Dwarka Matha, one of the four cardinal mathas (or ancient seats of learning) founded by Adi Shankara in the 8th century, is also housed here. The best time to visit this temple is during Janamashtmi and Navratri, when celebrations are at their vibrant best.
Climb down the 56 steps from the Swarga Dwar of the Dwarkadhish Temple to reach Gomti Ghat, beside the revered Gomti River. A tributary of the Ganges, this river is believed to be the daughter of the Hindu sage Vashist. The place where this river meets the ocean, known as the Gomti Sangam, is considered the most sacred. Pilgrims and tourists alike are seen taking a dip in its holy waters, with a hope to wash away all their sins. The popular Gomti Sangam Ghat is also the site of the Samudra Narayan Temple, dedicated to goddess Gomati, and known for its Panchanada Tirtha or five sweet water wells.

Set on a hill in the middle of the Arabian Sea, this Shiva temple is one of the most scenic in Dwarka. Despite its small structure, it makes for picture-perfect views and surroundings all around. One can easily walk from the coast to this temple, except during high tide when the route gets submerged. Head to this charming temple during Mahashivratri to take part in the magnificent fair, which is attended by thousands of devotees.
Located just off the coast, this island is a must-visit on a pilgrimage to Dwarka. Embark on a scenic ferry ride to Beyt Dwarka, believed to have once been the residence of Lord Krishna and his family. This picturesque island now features a number of shrines dedicated to Krishna, along with beautiful white sand beaches, coral reefs, and water sports facilities. For adventure enthusiasts, the beaches here are great for surfing.
One of the 12 holy Jyotirlingas, the most revered shrines of Shiva, this prominent temple is located on the route between Gomti Ghat and Beyt Dwarka. Prepare to be awed by the magnificent giant statue of Shiva here, which mesmerizes both devotees and tourists alike. This Shiva temple is also popular for its Tri-mukhi Rudraksh Linga, which unlike other black stone Shivalingas is made of a stone called ‘Dwarka Shila’, and has small chakras on it. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga worships Shiva’s manifestation as Nageshwar, ‘Lord of Snakes’, and is said to protect devotees from all kinds of poison.
For a break from temple visits, head to Dwarka Beach, not far from the city’s main temple. Set along the Arabian Sea coast, this popular beach is great for a relaxed morning, a lazy afternoon, or even for an evening walk by the waters. Explore the natural caves and cracks formed by the waves on the rocks besides the sea. Located near the beach, the popular Dwarka Lighthouse is a must-visit for its spectacular views of the Arabian Sea and of Dwarka city, amidst the cool sea breeze and the pleasant sound of the waves. Climb up this 43m tower for a blissful experience and a complete view of the city’s temples—the Dwarkadhish and Samudra Narayan Temple on the left, and Bhadkeshwar Mahadev and Rukmini Temple on the right.
