Hong Kong is just the place for a glamorous exploration of fine wines, bubblies and cocktails from around the world. And when paired with some excellent cuisine put together by culinary masters, all of it savoured in the backdrop of stunning views and skylines, it will make for a memorable adventure. So let’s get your wining and dining plan rolling! Here are some of the hottest places in Hong Kong you must visit for embarking on a gastronomic discovery.
A great Italian restaurant in Hong Kong, this one will have you confused about what is better here—the food or the wine. Because both are absolutely world-class! The wines are sourced from various small and quaint towns in Italy and people rave about their ravioli and lamb ribs; and also their handmade pasta, grissini and ricotta. It’s best to go for their Italian shared plates matched with an extensive wine list curated by award-winning sommelier Giorgio de Maria. But if you’d rather order a wine separately, choose from their selection of macerated (white like a red) wines. The seating is unique too—one long table with numerous seats around it!
Location: 42-44 Peel St.

Ranked among The World’s 50 Best Restaurants for the seventh consecutive year, this two-star Michelin restaurant run under the able leadership of Chef Richard Ekkebus never fails to amaze people. Be it their adventurous and creative French cuisine based on classical techniques, or their stunning dining room with an out-of-the-world hanging ceiling sculpture featuring over 3500 copper tubes, this place definitely leaves a mark on the guests. Try their famous Mieral Bresse pigeon breast with wild cep mushrooms, coupled with Sommelier’s selection of 980 different references—all top quality wines culled from old-world vintages in Italy and France, and mind-blowing bottles sourced from Chile, Argentina and Portugal. For not- to-be-forgotten celebrations, head for their Private Wine Room, which is an ideal place for cheering milestones and feats.
Location: The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, 15 Queen’s Rd C, Central, Central and Western District
Passion for the best natural wine and excellent food is the driving force behind the success of Hong Kong’s first and only wine cellar, where wine is made of organic fruits with little or no technological intervention during vinification. One of the best places to sample wine in Hong Kong, their Domaine Jaulin-Plaisantin or Bernard Baudry is definitely worth tasting. For lip-smacking food, they use the freshest of the produce and the best of ingredients sourced exclusively from select producers. No wonder, they have a small but perfect seasonal menu. Their black pudding (Boudin Noir), with its melt-in-the-mouth texture and exceptional flavours, is bound to make you an instant fan. Do try their desserts too, specially the Bitter Chocolate Pot, topped with candied walnuts.
Location: B/F., 97 Hollywood Rd, Central

Packing diners into a small setting, this no-reservation policy Tapas Bar comes across as one of the best places to drink in Hong Kong. The brainchild of Michelin starred Chef Jason Atherton, 22 Ships has an enviable list of wines, Spanish beers and spirits. Spanish sherries pair fabulously with Tapas, and you get to choose from about 16 types. If sherry is not your calling, try their range of sangria. Executive Chef Aaron Gillespie’s casual and easy going nature reflects in all his dishes as he whips up his signature Iberico and Foie Gras Burgers or the much-loved lamb shoulder slow-cooked in cumin served with baba ganoush. For dessert, do try their Goat’s Cheese Ice-cream.
Location: G/F, 22 Ship St, Hong Kong Island
Want a true French experience? Head for Le Tambour. A tiny, yet warm and cosy bar, you will find some of the best French wines here. A must-try is their sweet gewürztraminer from Vallee Noble Seppi Landmann or if you like something drier, ask for their Grenache Blanc from Mas des Tannes. Choose from their by-the-glass options, which include collections like La Forge Estate Pinot Noir. Their pizzas and appetizers are a gastronomic delight. Enjoy it all with some live foot-tapping music that they occasionally host.
Location: 52A Peel St, Central, Central and Western District
Located on the 49th floor, Café Gray Deluxe Bar offers modern European dining in the backdrop of Victoria Harbour’s breath-taking views. It is headed by Chef Gray Kunz who is famed for using organic seasonal ingredients for his signature dishes and a number of modern techniques to enhance his Americana and European cuisine. Try his herb-crusted Sea Bass Provençale and house-cured Gravlax. For the wine pairing, go for the highly recommended combination of Pinot Grigio from La Tunella (Italy) with Ravioli or an Austrian Sauvignon Blanc-tasting white wine with Skate Wing.
