SURPRISE ME!
The internet is flooded with all kinds of travelling hacks for women. But doesn’t anyone realise that sometimes women are just regular travellers looking for tips that are beyond the usual packing, shopping and safety guidelines? So, here goes. Presenting 17 travel tips for women, here or anywhere in the world, who are mesmerised by all things travel.
There is so much fun in being a drifter, but it is not always the best idea. Leave some plans to chance, but make sure you pre-book the biggies like hotels and flights.

When travelling, place all crucial items in the same place for a quick inventory call; preferably in a small carry bag you keep with you at all times. For me, it includes my passport, ID card, tickets, phone, wallet and sometimes also my camera.
In your pre-planning phase, download useful apps like a GPS, travel guides, translator and a currency convertor. You can even download and save maps to be used offline.
You are stronger than you give yourself credit for, even when you are clinging to a fold out map of the country you are in. Remember, you are a traveller!
A woman’s instinct is her biggest tool. Trust it! If someone approaches you and you feel uncomfortable, leave. Period. Being rude should be the least of your worries.

This is advisable for everyone. You will not only enjoy the views better, it is easier figuring out your way in an unknown country when the sun is shining.
Have a separate budget for your travel and keep a tally of the money you are spending. Don’t end up splurging your last few hundreds on some impulse shopping, only to find out that you are now broke.
When heading out, have a copy of your emergency contacts and an ID document with you. Carry the name of the place you are staying at on a piece of paper in the local language as well. Always have photocopies of all your essential documents stashed separately from the originals. These are essential in case the originals are lost or damaged.
Carry several pairs of undergarments in your carry- on, just in case your luggage is lost or winds up in a different country.

As women, this sounds like an insurmountable feat. When needed, you should be able to carry your luggage on your own, comfortably. What if you are late for your flight and need to make a quick sprint? Or you are stuck in an unpleasant situation and need to get out pronto?
Don’t take this at face value. It might be a camera for a photographer, a book for a voracious reader, a sketchbook for an artist, or a journal for a writer. Bring whatever makes you feel at home. Carrying your favourite food is also not a bad idea.
Pill containers make great jewellery organisers. Spectacle cases can be used for storing cables and chargers. Shower caps can be used to store wet swimwear and even shoes. Keep some bubble wrap too. Might sound silly, but it comes in very handy to store your shopping. Lastly, use waterproof bags for make-up, toiletries and other stuff which can leak. It might be a good idea to have clamshell, or water proof luggage as it is sturdier.
Take along a heat-resistant carrying case so that you can pack your equipment after use. If you don’t have one, you can also use a potholder to wrap up that straightener or curling iron.

A clean loo is a basic necessity which can be hard to come by at times. Check with the locals for directions. As a backup, keep a pee buddy handy.
When travelling, there is just so much we need. At the airport, we keep fishing for our passports and tickets. When out and about, we need to carry sunglasses, lip balm and what not. Having deep pockets can come in really handy at such times.
Never stand on the corner or on a street when you are trying to figure out things on a map or a guide. It makes you an ideal target for muggers and pickpockets. Just pop into a store or a restaurant and take all the time you need.
When you’re travelling it is very easy for things to go sideways. Leave your contact number with friends and family before you set out. Use free WiFi in your hotel, or at café to stay in touch with them regularly so they know you’re safe. Always leave a trail of breadcrumbs so that they know when to start looking for you in case you go MIA.
So, there you go! 17 things to keep in mind for an amazing trip. Time to pack your bags!
