The original name for this city was Vijayapura, which means “city of triumph” in Sanskrit.

The Taj Bawadi, a once-functioning water tank that is now a stunning Bijapur monument, was named after Ibrahim II's bride, Taj Sultana. Some say that a stone thrown into the well from one end would never reach the other because of its great depth (almost 100 feet). During the time of the Shahi dynasty, Taj Bawadi was the most important water supply.

Hyder Khan's Upri Buruj, north of Dakhani Idgah in Bijapur, is a must-see attraction. It was constructed in 1584. The outside of this tower, which is a sphere 80 feet in diameter, is paved with stone stairs. This area, which goes by the name Uppali Buruz, is full of antiquated weapons and water storage tanks from the time of the conflict.

Ali Adil Shah (1557-1580) constructed Chand Bawdi, a stepwell, on the eastern outskirts of Bijapur city, and visitors who find themselves there should definitely check it out if they have the time. This tank was given to Adil Shah by his wife, Chand Bibi. Following the fall of the Vijayanagar Empire, many refugees made their way to Bijapur.
