Overview

One of Chennai’s oldest structures, this temple is home to the shrines of Lord Shiva and Goddess Karpagambal (Parvati). Six daily rituals are performed from 5:30am to 10pm at the temple.

What To Expect?

Devotees are welcomed through a 37-m-high gopuram (gateway) into the Dravidian styled temple. The premise houses 63 deities carved in bronze and has one of the oldest trees in Chennai, Punnai Tree.

Tips

  • Attend the 10-day-long celebrations of the Aruvathumoovar festival (March-April).
  • Visit on a Friday when Goddess Karpagambal is decorated with a garland of gold coins.
  • Savour the religious offerings called Puliyodharai and curd rice available in the evening.
