India’s North East states are a veritable paradise and the ‘Seven Sisters’ have an almost other-worldly charm. Of the seven states, Assam is the most visited and there are plenty of things to see and do here. Here’s our pick of the top 10 if you're here for a long weekend:
1. Wildlife Safaris
Assam has a rich biodiversity and its jungles, grasslands and wetlands are home to no fewer than 5 wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. Kaziranga is the most famous one, as it’s one of very few places where the Indian one-horned rhinoceros can be seen in its natural habitat. Other sanctuaries include Dibru-Saikhowa, Manas, Nameri and Orang. Elephant-back rides are the best way to explore these national parks.

2. River Cruises
A unique way of experiencing the wildlife reserves is by taking a cruise down the Brahmaputra River. Assam Bengal Navigation runs regular river cruises that include the national parks of Kaziranga and Manas. You can choose a cruise ranging between 4 and 14 nights.
3. Festive Cheer
As in other parts of the country, the harvest festival is celebrated in Assam as well. Known as Magh Bihu, the festival lasts for an entire week and is accompanied by song and dance, bonfire gatherings, sports and games, buffalo fighting and of course, a feast of fish and traditional sweets. It’s a must-do if you’re visiting Assam in mid-January.
4. Spiritual Journey
Perhaps the most famous temple in Assam is the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. This Hindu temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and is dedicated to the tantric goddess Kamakhya. It’s an important pilgrimage centre and the annual Ambubasi Mela takes place here. Durga Puja is also celebrated with much fanfare here.
5. Buddhist Chants
Buddhism is one of the major religions in Assam and it’s also practised by several tribes in the state. Guwahati has several Buddhist temples; the most prominent one being the Bamunimaidan temple. At Hajo, 24 kilometres from Guwahati, lies the Hayagriva Mahadeva temple, which is an important pilgrimage destination for both Hindus and Buddhists.
6. Tea Ceremony
One of the most famous products of Assam is its excellent quality tea, which is exported all over the world. The state is dotted with tea plantations that you can visit and also stay at. The annual Tea Festival at Jorhat takes place in November and includes tea tastings, visits to tea estates and heritage sites, ethnic fairs and food festivals.
7. Cultural Treat
One of the symbols of the neo-Vaishnavite culture are the satras – monasteries and educational centres all over the state. The Rasotsava festival at Dakhinpat Satra, the Apsara dance at Auniati Satra and the performing arts at Bengenaati Satra are integral parts of Assam.
8. Culinary Adventures
Simple preparations, light spices and fermented foods characterise Assamese food. Rice and fish are the mainstays as are leafy vegetables.
9. Retail Therapy
Silk sarees, Assamese teas, woven handlooms, bamboo and wickerwork make great souvenirs from Assam. Shop at Guwahati’s Fancy Bazaar or Paltan Bazaar or at one of the many handicraft shops and government emporiums.
10. Activities Galore
If you’re looking for fun activities, try golfing at one of the many courses located on tea estates. Or participate in the favourite local sport of football. In the evening, try catching a live performance by one of the local rock bands.

Dear Bettina, What would you say about killing animals for food to your so called western "better" civilized people?
Bettina | on 24 March 2018
quite shocked to see your article with the headline "festival cheer" by a photo of buffalos bleeding in distress and being forced to fight for the so called "festival cheer". When does India EVER learn something about environment and animal protection ??????
