Still relatively unknown, and with loads of charm (along with some magnificent architecture and pristine beaches), Diu makes for an incredible weekend getaway.

Looking For The Lions

A tad sleepy but super-excited, we took the 6 am safari in the Gir National Park hoping to spot the Asiatic Lion in its sole habitat. Two hours into the jungle and we had no luck finding the majestic beast. Feeling bummed, I wished we had opted for the Devalia Safari Park instead, which is an eco-zone that keeps lions in their natural habitat enclosures.

Word of advice: Purchase your safari permit online in advance as buying it from the ticket window is next to impossible. It is poorly managed by rude personnel.

Reaching Diu

It was time to pack our bags and zip ahead to Diu, which is about 77 kilometres away. We were especially kicked about catching the stunning views of the Arabian Sea. Definitely not a mini-Goa as it is often described, Diu has a good vibe about it. There is another reason that makes Diu so popular among the Gujaratis. Any guesses why? Because alcohol consumption is permitted here!

Is This a Dream?

Radhika Beach Resort - The paradise we stayed at!

Following our GPS, we sped towards Nagoa Beach (easily the most popular one here) to get to our home away from home – Radhika Beach Resort. We were simply bowled over by its location. It takes precisely 10 steps from the main gate of the resort to reach the beach. Tariq did not miss the chance of capturing the view from our balcony.

Nagoa Beach – The Tourist Hotspot

Nagoa Beach thronged by tourists for water sports

It was unbelievable to see so many tourists splashing away at the Nagoa Beach. Families, friends and even the elderly could be seen having the time of their lives sitting by the sea, trying out the water sports or enjoying a drink.

Jallandhar Beach – Paradise Regained

The calm and serene Jallandhar Beach

In search of a quiet beach to soak in the peace and quiet of the Saurashtrian Island, we discovered the Jallandhar Beach. The fact that very few people came to this corner just added to its charm.

Cruisin’ in Diu

To get a sense of the city, we decided to take a ride around town. The influence of the Portuguese settlers of yore is quite evident. We saw the famous St Paul’s Cathedral, Diu Fort, the Lighthouse and the Musical Fountain.

Tomorrow will have us on our way to Vadodara. More about it later!
