Often referred to as ‘the Dragon’, China’s obsession with building long stretches of architectural marvels doesn’t seem to end. Though not as long as the Great Wall of China, the Dragon Escalator in Beijing still makes you wonder why it’s not as popular as the former spectacle. Probably because it is one of China’s best kept secrets!

Located about 85 km north of Beijing, visiting Longqing Gorge can be a pleasant change from the crowded streets. The tranquil surroundings take a back-step in light of the magnificent appeal of the gigantic Dragon Escalator. A ride in this dragon’s belly takes you to China’s largest dam known as Three Gorges Dam.

Ride the Dragon’s Belly!

Being the world’s largest outdoor escalator, the 258 meters’ high, bright yellow dragon seems a little out of place against the lush surroundings and cliffs in the background. The scenic beauty of this dam has been much appreciated by tourists from around the world.

If you are thinking that riding the escalator is all there is to the place, then you are wrong! The fun isn’t over once you reach the top. Engage yourself in various fun activities like sailing on a boat trip on the artificial lake or taking a ride in a cable car.

Think the boat ride isn’t for the adrenaline junkie in you? No problem! Bungee jump in the gorge and feel your heart beat faster. And if the steep ascension to the top isn’t frightening enough, you’ll notice an exquisite display of fake, scary animals in different poses as you ride up. Not only does it add a cheesy element to your ride, but also becomes a great opportunity for those fun-filled, candid selfies.

How to Reach the Dragon Escalator?

Getting to the Dragon Escalator is easy. Take Bus 919 from Deshengmen to Yanqing County. You can also take Bus 875, which seems a more convenient option, since it drops you off closer to the entrance. A car ride takes a couple of hours from Beijing.

What Goes Up, Must Come Down! Not Always!

Considering the length of the ride, it will be a while till you reach the top. Unfortunately, you can’t enjoy the ride going down. The escalator only goes up! To come down, take the stairs or pay a few bucks extra to ride the toboggan.

There’s no doubt that a ride on the Dragon Escalator will be one of the most exciting things you’ll do on your trip to China. Don’t miss this opportunity! Try something different this time around!
