Making of the Flower Carpet

The creation of a masterpiece by volunteers

Entirely made of flowers called Begonias, the conceptualization of the 75 x 24 metre Flower Carpet is based on a theme. The number and colours of flowers to be used, their placement and structure is planned by experts and outlines are drawn. The carpet border is made of green grass turf and is laid down first. It is then that more than 100 volunteers gather and use their artistic skills to arrange the flowers. The task is completed in four hours.

Begonia – The Chosen One

Bright and beautiful - Begonias

The elaborate colours and patterns of the Flower Carpet are fascinating. Credit for the same goes to the main component that is used to make it – Begonias. These flowers are available in a wide range of colours and patterns. These flowers are also chosen to make the carpet because of their durability and resistance to extreme weather conditions.

Some Facts…

The first Flower Carpet was made in 1971 and was designed by the landscape architect, E. Stautemans. The floral display was inspired by other innovative carpets that he had seen in the Flemish region.
