The biggest draw at the Vautha Fair is the cattle fair.

Just 55 kilometres away from Ahmedabad, Vautha is the place I am talking about. Situated at the confluence of seven rivers, Vautha is all set to offer a lot beyond the music and spectacle of the waves lashing relentlessly across the rivers.

Every year on Karthik Poornima, this humble town becomes host to around 25,000 tourists.

Legend has it that Lord Kartikey, son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, performed important rituals on Karthik Poornima, by the river here. Vautha Fair is a time when devotees from all over the country come to take a dip in the holy waters of the sangam or confluence of rivers.  It is also believed that bathing in this holy water is equivalent to taking a dip in Allahabad’s sangam. The venue of the fair is the ground of sangam tirtha, which is completely covered with tents to accommodate the devotees. Rituals are carried out on the banks of the river and by the evening, thousands of lamps and flowers can be seen floating on the waters. A picture you would want to capture in your cameras to cherish for a long time!

The biggest draw of the event is the cattle fair, which is one of the largest cattle fairs in the country.

“Hmm...  Another animal fair in India?” Is that what you’re thinking? Well this one is unique in its own right!

To begin with, the cattle fair at Vautha is a massive trade fair of donkeys! Be prepared to watch thousands of donkeys crowding the grounds far beyond the horizon. Giving company to these animals are beautifully decorated camels, the pride of Western India. Did you know that around thousands of donkeys are traded every day at the festival? The chief customers at fair are the nomads of the neighbouring regions.

While in Gujarat, try visitng the famous Somnath Temple.

Moving on from the cattle fair, Vautha Fair is also where you will find handicrafts and delicacies from all over the state. Succumb to the lure of mouth-watering ladoos, the world famous Gujarati farsan and a lot more, here at the festival.

To describe it in the simplest way, the Vautha Fair has a bit of the Pushkar Fair madness, a bit of the divine experience of the evening aarti in Haridwar with a lot of Gujrati flavours blended in.
