OFFBEAT
500 million years of limestone formation and transformation created this natural wonder in Vietnam. Around 2000 isles and islets combined to form this bay that extends 120 kilometres along the coastline. Add to that hundreds of fish species that inhabit the waters of this picturesque harbour. Welcome to none other than the Halong Bay in Vietnam.
Situated in Vietnam’s Quang Ninh Province, the beautiful Halong Bay has earned a place in the New 7 Wonders of Nature list. It’s no surprise that it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to its beauty and rich cultural heritage.
Be prepared to be charmed by the many surprises that await you as you explore Halong Bay. Along with limestone islands, many natural caves have formed here over time. While Heavenly Residence Grotto (Thien Cung), Surprise Grotto (Sung Spot) and Three Palace Grotto (Tam Cung) are some of the popular ones, there are many that have not been named. What’s more, many karst formations of different shapes and sizes including those resembling a tortoise, a rooster and a soldier can be spotted here. A visit to Halong Bay will also give you a chance to know all about floating villages and what life is like here.
Halong Bay literally translates into ‘descending dragon bay.’ Legend has it that the many islets of this bay were created when jewels dropped from the mouths of Godsent dragons. It is believed that these jade droplets formed thousands of islands to protect the bay from marauders.
Take a helicopter tour over the islands or cruise through them - there's so much you can do on your visit to Halong Bay. From adventure sports and cruises to unique dining experiences and shopping, there's something for everyone's delight in this charming bay.
