There’s something very attractive about the north eastern part of India. Life is simple and easy, and the views truly magnificent. Such is the vibe in Kalimpong in the Darjeeling district.

Overlooking the Teesta River, much like its name, Kalimpong is a quaint town on a ridge with views of the beautiful Himalayan Mountains. The weather is cool all through the year, making it a great getaway from Kolkata.

Of Tourist Attractions, Food and More

Literally translating to ‘Land of the Kings’, apart from the usual long strolls along the narrow lanes of this hill hamlet, Kalimpong has some great discoveries to make. These include Dr. Grahams Homes, a home for abandoned Anglo Indian children and orphans, which definitely tops the list. This is followed by the Neora Valley National Park showcasing Kalimpong’s blooming flower industry and a few monasteries such as Tharpa Choling Monastery and Zong Dog Parli Fo Brang Monastery.

For local food, I’d suggest sampling the famous Kalimpong milk lollipops. The sweetness and richness of Kalimpong lollipops is absolutely unique and definitely worth more than the Rs. 25 per packet that it is sold for. Stock up on these at the famous Lark’s Provision’s store. Pick up some Churrpi as well, which is a tangy and chewy cheese made from Yak’s milk.
