Facing the eastern direction in a manner that the first rays of the sun fall directly on the Shiva lingam, the Katarmalla Sun Temple, Almora has tremendous religious and historic significance. Located 16 kilometres northwest of Almora, this is one of the most remarkable temples of India situated in the Kumaon region in Uttaranchal. To get here, you can either trek through the deodar forests or drive up close to the temple. While you are here, don’t miss the panoramic views of the Himalayas.

History says…

While different temples of India boasts of a unique architectural style and has its own history, this temple was built 800 years ago by the Katyuri raja, the Katarmalla. Devoted to the deity Burhadita (the old Sun God),  not many people know that the idol of Surya in the Katarmalla temple dates back to the 12th Century.

45 shrines and more…

Surrounded by 45 intricately carved shrines is the main temple where you will find idols of Lord Shiva, goddess Parvati, goddess Lakshmi and Lord Narayana. As you step inside, marvel at the stone-built walls, the metal figures, stunning pillar carvings and the skilfully cut out wooden doors, which are by far the most distinctive feature of this temple.

Some of the doors and panels of the temple were moved to the National Museum in Delhi because during the 10th Century, a presiding deity was stolen from the temple. Though the temple is in a decaying state , still owing to the undying faith in the Sun God, it is visited by a huge number of devotees from different parts of the world.

Treasured and preserved by the Archeological Survey of India now, the Katarmalla Temple is one of the must-visits among various temples of India.
