Mumbai's monsoon casts a spell on not just Mumbaikars but on every visitor who comes here during this time. Garma garam Cutting Chai along with spicy Bhajiya (Pakoras) and Vada Pav make for the perfect companions during monsoon but a quick getaway will be the cherry on the cake! While Lonavala and Khandala are very popular among tourists, here is my handpicked list of the less explored monsoon getaways from Mumbai:

1. Karnala

Nature lovers are in for a treat at Karnala Bird Sanctuary, one of the most exciting places near Mumbai for bird watching. Monsoon is the best season to spot exotic bird species like the Malabar Whistling Thrush, Magpie Robin and Paradise Flycatcher. Trekkers are in for a treat at Karnala, one of the most beautiful monsoon getaways from Mumbai. Monsoon is also a great time to trek up the 11th century Karnala Fort, which offers stunning panoramic views of the green Sahyadri mountains.

Distance from Mumbai: 48 kilometres approximately

Recommended Duration: A 1.5 hours’ drive from Mumbai will take you to Karnala. It makes for a good day trip as well as a relaxing weekend getaway.

2. Igatpuri

Igatpuri has always been among my favourite monsoon getaways from Mumbai. Spectacular mountain views, lush green vistas, charming waterfalls, serene environs - these are some of the things you will come across on your drive to Igatpuri. The rain drops falling on your window will only make the drive more exciting. Vipassana International Academy, or Dhammagiri, is the most popular attraction here and only adds to your rejuvenating experience. The backdrop of the Sahyadri range covered in mist lends a mystical charm to the Vipassana center. A tour of the center with one of the volunteers there promises to be an awarding experience for nature lovers and hikers.

Distance from Mumbai: 121 kilometres approximately

Recommended Duration: As the distance is not much and takes about 3 hours, you can either stay in the quaint town for a couple of days or go for a day trip.

3. Malshej Ghat

Let the symphony of raindrops whisper in your ears as you head to the most stunning mountain pass in the Western Ghats. Welcome to Malshej Ghat - a nature lover's delight, trekker's paradise and a haven for solace seekers. Waterfalls, dense groves, lakes and the historic Shivneri Fort make it a popular picnic spot among people of all ages. The orange and red migratory flamingos are the star attraction of Malshej Ghat during the rainy season.

Distance from Mumbai: 127 kilometres approximately

Recommended Duration: With so many things to do, Malshej Ghat makes for a great weekend getaway from Mumbai and is a 3.5-hour drive from the city.

4. Bhandardara

Bhandardara, on the banks of the Pravara River, is among the best nature resorts near Mumbai. It is also one of the most preferred romantic getaways from Mumbai. The fresh air and scenic beauty of the place is the perfect recipe for rejuvenating your senses. Take in beautiful views of the Bhandardara Lake, which is at its prettiest under a moonlit sky. What’s more, the Randha Falls here are in their full glory during monsoon. For those of you who love trekking, the historic Ratangad Fort is a good spot. You can also start your trek for the Kalsubai peak (Maharashtra’s highest point at 1646 metres) from here.

Distance from Mumbai: 165 kilometres approximately

Recommended Duration: Bhandardara (4 hours away by road) offers a good break from the city humdrum and two days are usually good for a trip here.

5. Mahabaleshwar

The monsoon magic of Mahabaleshwar is hard to resist. The gushing waterfalls (open only during monsoon) and the greenery around will more than compensate for missing boating facilities at Venna Lake. Watching Lingamala Waterfall disappear and reappear because of the mist is the most beautiful part of visiting Mahabaleshwar during rains. The crisp invigorating mountain air is also best experienced in these months when the hills turn a deep shade of green and brighten up the environment. Trek up to Wilson Point to enjoy a mesmerizing view of the sunrise. Don't be surprised if you see a rainbow somewhere in the distance!

There are a lot of hotels in Mahabaleshwar which offer several outdoor and indoor recreational activities. The fun doesn't end here. If you have time, stop by at the twin hill station of Panchgani on your way back. No doubt Mahabaleshwar makes for one of the best monsoon getaways from Mumbai.

Distance from Mumbai: 263 kilometres approximately

Recommended Duration: Mahabaleshwar is around 6 hours away by road and 2-3 days are ideal for you to soak in the calm environs here.

These short breaks make for ideal monsoon getaways from Mumbai and offer the much needed respite from the hustle-bustle of the city. In fact, going for weekend trips is the best way to experience the lure of monsoons. So where are you heading to this weekend?
