Celebrate the beauty and bounty of life in Canada. Home to stunning natural beauty in the form of national parks and historic sites, the opportunities to experience the wonders of the outdoors are vast and varied. Here are the top 5 places in Canada for nature buffs to explore.

1. Lake Louise, Banff National Park

Within the picturesque Banff National Park is Lake Louise, a glacial lake fed by the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Surrounded by peaks and forests, the lake displays surreal shades of blue in an unsullied landscape. The lake, which was named after the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, is resplendent beyond its looks. In the summer, Lake Louise is overrun with nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurists who come here for hiking, camping, canoeing, cycling, swimming and horseback riding, amongst a host of other activities. In the winter, snowboarders, skiers and ice skaters revel in the unending slopes. Banff National Park is also where you can see The Northern Lights phenomenon that looks all the more spectacular when reflected on the waters of Lake Louise.

2. Big Muddy Badlands, Saskatchewan

Don’t be intimidated by its name! If anything, the carved sandstone ravines of Big Muddy Badlands in Saskatchewan is a natural wonder that attracts nature buffs from near and far. These deeply eroded rock edifices and cliffs are the only attractions in an otherwise barren landscape that looks like it’s been directly transplanted from the Wild West! Interestingly enough, the Big Muddy Badlands was once the hiding ground for notorious bandits such Dutch Henry and the Sundance Kid.

3. Red Sands, Prince Edward Island

Canada isn’t a country usually associated with beaches but it surprises with the beautiful red sands on Prince Edward Island. Spanning over 800 kilometres along the coast are red sandy beaches that get their blush hue from the sandstone cliffs at the edge of the island, which have endured millions of years of erosion. Take some time to explore the adjoining countryside and the pastoral scenery which you can walk or bike through.

4. Cathedral Grove, Vancouver Island

There’s a national spectacle to be found in almost every corner of Canada! Within MacMillan Provincial Park is Cathedral Grove, a forested wonderland that protects and preserves towering Douglas-fir trees, some of which are over 800 years old! Magically created are paths that weave through the dense foliage and are ideal for cycling, hiking and wildlife sighting.  Along with its pristine setting, MacMillan Provincial Park is home to several species of fauna and flora including deer, black bears, woodpeckers and owls.

5. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, British Columbia

Hold on tight and look down only if you have the stomach for it. The Capilano Suspension Bridge Park has a 140-metre long suspension footbridge at a height of over 70 metres above the Capilano River, amidst the towering evergreens of the cedar-scented rainforest. The views from here are likely to be etched in your memory forever. The Capilano Suspension Bridge Park also has other areas of interest including a Living Forest Exhibit, a cantilevered walkway clinging to the granite cliff called Cliffwalk, and Kia’palano, a totem pole park. To truly enjoy your time amidst nature here, take a free guided tour conducted by the park’s staff.
