Want To Go ?

For most, seeing the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, given the high costs and the challenging climatic conditions it involves. While you can never be certain of success, planning well can sure increase your chances of witnessing this dazzling celestial show.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

- While the lights can be seen September onwards, the chances are higher from December on, as autumn nights in this part of the globe tend to be cloudy.

- Plan your trip around New Moon, for darker skies.

- Keep several days in hand to increase your chances of getting lucky.

- Pack in enough warm clothes, drivers license to drive a snowmobile, tripod for night photography, and swimwear for the hot tub/sauna.

- Take a late-night flight to the destination you choose. Some of the best views of the northern lights are often from the plane.

- Once there, you can keep tabs on a short-term aurora forecast of that region to feel better prepared, such as the one provided by the Geophysical Institute.

- Be patient. It will take more than one night of gazing at the skies to see this marvel of nature.

- Prime viewing time anywhere is between 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. (local time); though it could occur any other time as well, or not at all.

- Get away from city lights. It is a good idea to rent a car and drive to a further location .

- Stay warm. You will be out in subzero temperatures chasing the lights; you can’t afford to catch a chill.

- It would be handy to carry hot tea/coffee in a thermos and something to munch on.

- Some hotels have alarm service for the lights. Check if yours does; it will save you the wait.

- It is a good idea to take a guided tour. Not only are they better at chasing the lights, most of them also come with a free do-over if you don’t see anything!
