Every city offers a range of hotels catering to different pockets. Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, has always been a city of strategic importance for many reasons. Being a seaport it has been a hub for passenger interchange and a converging point for rail-routes as well. The international airport provides quick access to North-East India, attracting throngs of tourists in transit. With its many attractions and events, Kolkata lures tourists every day. So, it comes as no surprise that there is no dearth of affordable lodging options here.

Whether you find yourself in the city on work, travel, or in transit – here are my recommendations for some of the cheapest Kolkata hotels that don’t compromise on quality. And to top it, they all are located in the best parts of town. So, take your pick!

1. Hotel Pushpak International, KYD Street

This is one of the few budget hotels in Kolkata offering an air-conditioned dormitory for eight people. Recommended for male guests, the rooms are available at throwaway prices. The location – barely five minutes from the Park Street Metro Station – makes the deal all the more lucrative! It is also about five kilometers from Howrah station, and a taxi ride won’t cost much. Other conveniences include laundry service, car rental facility and even secretarial services. Great street-side food stalls offer delicious but inexpensive meals, in the neighborhood.

2. Hotel Viceterrace, Camac Street

Another quality Kolkata hotel, located within the vicinity of Park Street, and the major commercial district of the city. It is ideal not only for business travellers, but also for families in transit, due to its location and spacious rooms which are relatively comfortable and clean. With 45 rooms, it is an economical guest house and offers a host of facilities including conferencing. This hotel is a little over five kilometers from Howrah station, and 15 kilometers from the Airport.

3. Marble Palace, Lake Place

This is a quiet guest house with friendly staff, located five kilometers from Park Street. Its locality in Lake Place is a leafy, quiet area and is considered exclusive. Families and even singles can lodge here, and avail of its value-for-money rates. The guesthouse has a host of facilities at a nominal cost – including internet connectivity, intra-city transfers and laundry service. Its 13 rooms are air-conditioned, ideal for the hot and humid conditions that are prevalent throughout the year.

4. Hotel Park Inn, Park Circus

The tariff at Hotel Park Inn includes breakfast, except in the case of a standard room. It is located in Park Circus, which is less than three kilometers from Park Street. There is free Wi-Fi, making this economical  hotel ideal for business guests. The rooms are air-conditioned, overlooking luscious greenery, and have all the modern comforts. Less than 12 kilometers from the Airport, this is a good option for folks who may require lodging even for one night.

5. Hotel Trimoorti, Ray Street

Just off Elgin Road, and walking distance from the landmark Forum Mall, the main advantage of this hotel is its relatively quiet interiors. The hotel has a reputation for courteous and helpful staff; rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi; and there’s plenty of parking available. For those driving in to Kolkata on work, this is definitely an advantage. The rooms are spacious with a study, dining table, snack basket and room service. The hotels’ restaurant offers varied cuisines as well a coffee shop where guests can unwind. The airport is only about 12 kilometres from here.
