The city of Tianjin is one of the only five metropolises in China.  Whilst it isn’t as well known with tourists as nearby Beijing or Shanghai, there is still plenty for tourists to see in this bustling city. Here are three of my top picks for your visit to Tianjin.

1. Take a tour along the Haihe River

From this arterial river you can see all that makes Tianjin a fabulous blend of modern and ancient China. Along the 22-kilometre long river bank, there are more than 20 bridges, and sights that range from the Haimen Ancient Temple to the historic Tianjin Railway Station. If you travel further out of town along the river, you can also see Dagu Fort that was constructed during the Ming Dynasty in the 16th century.

Marvel at the scenic beauty and historical and cultural sights as you take a tour along the Haihe Riiver

2. Test your bargaining skills in Ancient Culture Street

Ancient Culture Street greets you with a large and colourful arch, and takes you back to Tianjin in the 19th century. Whilst the street isn’t in its original condition, it retains its old-world charm. Marvel at the beautifully restored balconies, and haggle hard with the local shop owners as you scout for fabulous antiques. There are also some specialty shops such as the Tianyige Four Chinese Writing Tools Shop and the Nirenzhang Clay Figurine Shop, where you can learn about some ancient craft techniques.

3. Learn about the Son of Tianjin

Zhou Enlai was a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party and the first premier of the People’s Republic of China, a position he held for 26 years. He studied in Tianjin during his youth and is proudly referred to as the “son of Tianjin” by the locals. As a tribute to Zhou Enlai and his wife, the Zhou Enlai - Deng Yingchao Museum was established and is a fascinating insight into their lives together. Deng Yingchao was renowned for her devotion to the women’s liberation cause, making her a formidable partner for this amazing man.

Tianjin might be a huge city, but don’t be overwhelmed by its sheer size. There is much to see and experience here; so book your flight on MakeMyTrip.com and head to the city to take in the best of modern and ancient China.
