There are three occasions when couples tear their (own) hair apart over what to gift the better half – birthdays, anniversaries and then of course, comes Valentine’s Day. And no one, especially those in a relationship, can escape the hype surrounding this international festival of sorts. Since 14th February is around the corner and most of you must be researching Google for unique things to do on Valentine's Day, I have made the task slightly easier for you. Here are some suggestions:

Climb A Mountain Together

Why not do something romantic and adventurous together this Valentines Day, like climbing a mountain? Before you pull your blanket closer and think ‘No way, not in this lifetime’, stop and think again. There are couples who have renewed vows atop Mount Everest in Nepal, the world’s highest peak, and even done bungee jumping from the famous Bloukran’s Bridge in South Africa!

If they can do it, why can’t you? Hiking a mountain will be one of the biggest highs of your life, not to forget your relationship!

Have An Offbeat Destination Wedding

Forget the usual farmhouses or 5-star hotels as wedding venues. It’s passé and frankly, a little boring. Instead, make your D-day a thrilling experience with an offbeat destination wedding.

How about Mount Yasur in South Pacific with smoke hissing from the active volcano? Or an underwater wedding where you are surrounded by beautiful marine life?

If volcanoes don’t give you an adrenaline rush, there’s always a zero gravity wedding. Enter an aircraft and make the vows while floating and laughing together. Did I hear someone say ‘astronuts’?

Renew Vows On V-Day

With V-Day around the corner, celebrate your marriage by renewing wedding vows. The fun element, of course, will be the place. There is Dracula’s Castle in Romania a la The Addams Family. You can travel to the Death Valley (Stovepipe Wells) in CA where the Star Wars movies were shot. Or even visit Santa Cruz Mystery Spot where water flows skyward and you can walk up walls! How's that for an idea of things to do on valentine's day?

DIO (Do It Ourselves)

Yes, it’s a word I just made up since we are talking about couples. D-I-O is the plural of DIY, or Do It Yourself. Lots of duos want to do something special and not super expensive. Well, I have a few quirky things you can try –

Photoshoot: Don’t shirk away from this idea guys. You don’t have to have dapper good looks like Brad Pitt to do this; just an urge to do something different, sweet and fun.

Music Video: This is a rather surprising suggestion, given the fact I cannot sing to save my life. For all non-singers and Adele-like beauties, bond over some amazing songs; throw in a few dance steps and voila! You have a video of a lifetime.

Video Game Night: I can so hear my invisible boyfriend say ‘Game on!’ Kidding. Beat your man in a game of Counter Strike, FIFA, or NFS: Carbon. Come on ladies, I’m sure the men deserve a different Valentine’s Day this year where they don’t have to think of what to buy.

Brew Your Own Beer

Tired of the same old V-Day routine (and the exorbitant bill of course) when you take your lady love out for drinks? Get creative this year and brew your own beer at home instead! It’s an easy-to-use beer making kit and is the the ideal gift for beer enthusiasts. Experiment with flavours and see who comes up with the quirkiest names for drinks.

Hint: Avoid beer names like Doctor Morson’s Clown Poison, Ill Tempered Gnome and Moo Thunder Stout. There’s a limit to innovation. Seriously.

The Santa Cruz physics defying spot has made it to my bucket list. What about you? Try the ones you like from this list and let me know if they were a hit!
