SURPRISE ME!
Bejewelled with stunning vistas, pristine beaches, balmy islands & ancient Catalan edifices, the Mediterranean Coast of Spain has something for everyone. While spending as much as 3-weeks in Eastern Spain isn’t enough to explore all of it, we bring to you a 14-day itinerary to explore the most admired trio of Barcelona, Valencia & the Balearic Islands.
But, before you plan your trips, here are three things you should know:
1. The secret to avoid the crowd while also enjoying the glorious sunshine in Spain is to plan your trip during the months of April, May, September or October. The weather will be perfect for you to sunbathe on the beaches or take to the streets for an epic trip.
2. Spain is well-connected by public transport & it’s super-affordable! Opt for train or bus rides to cover longer distances and if you wish to commute by a private vehicle, hire a car or rent a bike.
3. Plan your trip around the seasonal festivals for an immersive experience, especially around the Tenerife Carnivals, Las Fallas de Valencia, Batalla de Vino, La Tomatina and La Mercè, among others.
Now that you know what to expect, here’s your 14-day Eastern Spain itinerary:
Day 1 - Day 4:
Hola, Barcelona!
Spain’s most vibrant city & the Catalonian capital, Barcelona is famous for its happening nightlife, amazing food, beautiful viewpoints, sunny beaches, & architectural marvels that speak volumes about Catalan Modernism.
While here, visit the famous unfinished Basilica de La Sagrada Familia and Casa Vicens Gaudí to marvel over the modernist buildings displaying the finest oriental detailing. End your day strolling through Park Güell gazing at the glistening ceramic art installations & mosaic art. Do not miss the idyllic sunsets from the park or hop over to the Bunkers del Carmel, if you want picturesque views of the sun & the city.
The next morning, drop by Casa Batlló, Casa Mila, Las Ramblas & La Boqueria Market for a wholesome cultural & culinary experience. Once through with your historic expedition, soak the sun on the sandy shores of Barceloneta Beach. Gobble down the delectable seafood & paella with a glass of your favourite drink at a seaside restaurant, while here.
On Day 3, visit the Picasso Museum to celebrate the works of the legendary Spanish-born artist, sign up for a walking tour at the Gothic Quarter, savour good food & drinks at the trendy bars & Catalan restaurants here and finally hop over to Montjuic Hill before calling it a day.
On your fourth day here, indulge in fun activities like football and volleyball at Mar Bella Beach & catch the sunset at San Sebastian Beach.
If you’d like to have a relaxed day, ride a cable car from Miramar, Montjuic to San Sebastian Tower in Barceloneta for panoramic views of the city’s emblematic landmarks. Next, drop by L’Aquàrium de Barcelona & meet native aquatic life from the Mediterranean, tropical seas & more. End your final day here, strolling on the Rambla de Mar walkway, capturing stunning views of the sparkling city at night.
Day 5 - Day 8:
Valencia Calling!
Catch a flight from Barcelona to Valencia or book a high-speed train journey on Day 5 to explore Valencia’s popular landmarks at your own pace. Explore the city starting at the lively Old Town to sample scrumptious tapas & fideua, witness the grandeur of La Lonja de La Seda, admire the Baroque paintings at Saint Nicholas Church, climb the El Miguelete bell tower to capture panoramic views of the city & stroll the streets of El Carmen spotting colourful graffiti.
Pack your sixth day with activities like canoeing at the City of Arts & Sciences, meeting the marine life up close at the L'Oceanogràfic aquarium & exploring the walkway canopy of L'Umbracle gardens.
On Day 7, enjoy soaking in the sun at Playa del Cabanyal or Malvarrosa Beach. While here, don’t miss savouring Valencia’s authentic traditional dishes, including paella—a wholesome one-pan rice-based meal flavoured with spices, fresh veggies & chicken, and esgarraet—a cold salad prepared with roasted red pepper & cod fish.
Snooze away in the southern end of Valencia on your eighth day here. Visit the Albufera Natural Park to enjoy natural views of the rice fields, ride a boat or sit by the freshwater lagoon, occasionally spotting the native & migratory birds inhabiting the region. After having a fair share of relaxation, sample delicious arroz a banda & all i pebre at the restaurants dotting the park.
Day 9 - Day 11:
Arrive on a Ferry at Mallorca!
Get set for a trip to Mallorca, the largest of the four major Balearic Islands. Known for its impressive beach resorts, isolated coves, limestone formations, vibrant nightlife & Mallorquin food, the island boasts stunning landscapes & white stretches of sand. Cycle along the coast of Cala Llombards and Playa de Muro or just relax under the sun on your visit here.
The next day, hike through the Serra de Tramuntana Mountain Range to photograph stunning views of the land below. Don’t miss enjoying a peaceful sleep at the charming Valldemossa Village nearby & wake up to the beautiful hues of orange groves surrounding you.
On day 11, drop by the part-pebble & part-sand Sa Calobra beach for pristine views of the crystal-clear waters & imposing cliffs. Rent a cab to make your way to the quiet Es Trenc beach. This powder-white sand beach truly adds the Caribbean touch to your pictures. While here, go paddle-boarding or soak the sun spotting seabirds around you. If you’re up for an adventure ahead, take a road trip to Porto Cristo to explore the Dragon Caves decorated with limestone & stalactite formations.
Day 12 & 14:
Travel Across the Water to Ibiza!
Board a ferry from Mallorca to Ibiza & give in to the hippy vibes of the island for the next 3 days. Alternatively, you can book a direct flight between the two islands if you wish to cut short on the travel time.
Lined with numerous bars, pulsating discotheques & beach-side clubs famed for their nightlife, Ibiza has a whole different side hidden within its folds. Take a stroll on the winding streets during the day to spot charming restaurants, little boutique shops and whitewashed houses decorated with pink & purple Bougainvillea vines.
You may also explore Ibiza’s Hippy Market Punta Arabi for handicraft knick-knacks, capture picture-perfect sunset at Es Vedrá, visit the boho décor and clothing, go cliff-diving at Cala Tarida, scuba dive with sea creatures at Ses Margalides, spot exotic birds at the Ses Salines Natural Park, and marvel over the stalactites & stalagmites formations inside Cova de Can Marçá, if you’re up for an adventurous trip here.
