HILL STATIONS
Planning to travel to the beautiful city of Nainital this summer? Great idea! Situated at an altitude of 2,084 metres above sea level, this charming hill station will delight you with views of the snow-clad mountains, cool winds blowing through your hair and sunlight shining bright on the elegant colonial structures. At night, you can gaze at the starry sky – a view we hardly get to enjoy in the cities, and roast marshmallows in the bonfire, while dancing to your favourite tunes. Does that sound like a plan? Well then, read on…
The best way to explore Nainital is on foot! You can get yourself from one place to another in a car, but what’s the fun in that? Taking a walk in this quaint little town while soaking in the beauty of the Himalayas is an unparalleled experience. If you’re up for it, we have compiled a list of best places in “The City of Lakes” that every traveller can explore on foot. Check it out!
Located in the heart of Nainital, this vibrant road connects the two ends of the hill station. It was officially renamed Govind Ballabh Pant Marg, but the locals and tourists still recognize it by its previous name – Mall Road. The road runs parallel to the Naini Lake and is dotted with local cafes, stores, hotels and restaurants. On the other side of the lake lies Thandi Sadak – it is less crowded compared to Mall Road, and no vehicles are allowed there.
The Mall Road is closed for vehicles during the months of May and June, making it easier for travellers to take a stroll without being interrupted by continuous honking. Here, you can dig into delicious meals and shop for woollen clothes, fragrant candles and other artefacts.
Since the road is located in the center of Nainital, it’s pretty easy to head to the famous hot-spots from here, on foot. Most hotels are also located in close proximity to the Mall Road, so you can easily walk up here while enjoying beautiful vistas of the mountains.
The Thandi Sadak is lined with lush green pine, deodar and oak trees, and the best time to take a walk on this road is during the evening. You can visit the many temples here, including Naina Devi temple, Shani Mandir, Mata ka Mandir and Hanuman Mandir. At night, you can head towards Tallital to grab a delicious hot meal with your family. If you wake up early, you can enjoy a jog here, while listen to the sweet chirping sounds of the birds.
