SURPRISE ME!
When I got admission into Kamala Nehru College, I was ecstatic. Of course, the college is part of the renowned Delhi University and is one of the top colleges in India, but a lot of other things really made me happy- a sense of freedom, the crowd and to top it all, the countless places to hang out nearby.
Delhi University, especially the South Campus has lots to explore. Trust me when I say, even three whole years aren’t enough!
Here’s a list of places that remain a favourite among all the students, be it the fuchchas or the final year students!
Hauz Khas Village becomes second home for all South Campus students by the end of their college life! It’s a cluster of really cool restaurants and cafes such as Moonshine, World Pizza Journey, Elma’s, OTB, among others. From Spanish and Italian, to Thai and North Eastern cuisine, the options are plenty. The Hauz Khas Fort, Deer Park and lake are also really nice places to chill. The Village is a popular location for photo shoots and a scene from “Rockstar” was shot in the fort. Check out the fashion boutiques in the small lanes and also visit the Chumbak store, which has funky products like phone covers, mugs and lots more.
GK, as it’s more commonly known is another popular hangout and a good place to shop. Bag, clothes, footwear, jewellery; name it and you’ll most certainly find it here. You’ll also find a lot of knock offs here, especially when it comes to bags and watches. So, keep your eyes open for Micheal Kors, Moschino, Tag Heuer and other brands. The best part- it’s affordable, the quality is good and bargaining is absolutely essential. If you’re looking for silver jewellery, Siloffer is where you should be headed. The shop is also popular for getting piercings done. When you’re tired of all the shopping, you can take a break at one of the many eating joints around or hop over to Prince Pan for a refreshing Jaljeera or enjoy Golgappas at Mahesh Chaat Corner.
What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think South Ex? The Bhelpuri and Sevpuri of course! The King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan used to come here regularly during his college days. South Extension is a posh market area and you’ll find a bunch of branded stores here as well as a number of jewellers. The market is also famous for good footwear and trendy accessories. Make sure you work up an appetite as a meal at the famous Bengali Sweet Centre is a must. The market remains closed on Mondays, so avoid making plans on that day.
Escape Delhi’s scorching heat and instead hang out with your friends at two of Delhi’s most happening malls. You will find a variety of high end brands like Guess and Burberry and other fashion labels like Forever 21, Zara and Mac here. Both the malls have movie theatres, so you can catch the latest movies! There’s also a flea market on Wednesdays at Select Citywalk where brands offers products at subsidized rates. Don’t forget to try the ice cream at Haagen Dazs or head to Krispy Kreme for the most delicious donuts. Big Chill in DLF Place is a favourite with college goers. Try the pasta dishes, Banoffee Pie and Blueberry Cheesecake. You can thank me later!
If you like street shopping and can haggle well (sometimes you won’t even need to because of the low prices), there’s no place like SN. From stylish clothes and bags, to trendy footwear and fashionable jewellery; you’ll find it here. It’s usually very crowded unless you go at around 11 am. But there are perks of reaching early- more variety, least possible prices and less crowd. You’ll also find Haldirams, Subway, Dominos and Mc Donalds in a mall adjacent to the market.
This is where you go when you want really good food. Some of the all-time favourite’s include momos at QD’s and burgers at Big Yellow Door. Other than these, there are a number of stalls, particularly 34 Chowringhee Lane offering street food, like rolls and Shawarma that are affordable and delicious at the same time. Hashtag Café is another popular hangout and the pasta and desserts here are a must try. There are many institutes in the vicinity that provide coaching for different entrance exams such as CAT, GMAT, CPT, BANK/PO etc. The area behind the market has a number of PGs for college students.
So, the next time you and your friends are looking for a hangout after college, you know where to go!
