OFFBEAT
Last month it was the Underwater Museum in Mexico that caught my fancy but this time, it’s a remote island in the same city which might prove otherwise. A scary island of the dolls that I’d think twice before visiting…
Known as La Isla de Las Muñecas, this island is located on a small and deserted area in Xochimico canals, which is believed to be the creepiest place in Mexico. A scene right out of a horror movie- imagine yourself stranded on an island surrounded by hundreds of dead dolls gazing at you!
Story Behind Island Of The Dolls…
Injured limbs, knocked-out eyes and beheaded bodies- you’d find these dolls in the most bizzare shapes and sizes that will scare the living daylights out of you. These dilapidated dolls have been suspended from various trees on the island since decades. Think night and even the thought of it would give you the creeps. Insiders including the caretaker, Anastasio believe that the land is possessed by a spirit. Read what Anastasio’s eerie tale is…
The garden was originally the prized property of Anastasio’s cousin- Don Julian Santana who once saw a girl drowning in the canal. The garden is believed to be haunted by her spirit post her demise. And to ward off her evil spirit, Santana began collecting discarded dolls from trash boxes, garbage dumps and filthy areas, only to hang them in every corner of the garden. Over a period of time, he hung around 1500 dolls on the tree branches to create a memorial of sorts for the drowned girl. However, much to his chagrin, the eeriness continued…
Years later, in 2001, Santana died. His dead body was found in the same canal where the mysterious girl died. Some call it a heart attack; some blame it on aging but who knows the true story…
Today, the garden is managed by Anastasio. He runs it as a tourist attraction in the daytime and many curious travellers often drop in to see this unique collection of diabolic dolls. But at night, he says the mystery unfolds. The dolls suddenly become alive at midnight. Their heads turn and sometimes he hears them whisper too… goosebumps!
Now that’s what I call real scary. Isn’t that strange too? Let me know what you think. And before I sign off, all I’d like to say is, sleep well tonight.
