OFFBEAT
Don’t judge Dublin by the title. I chose it because of the song. The road to Dublin is anything but rocky; a pleasant journey full of fun, adventure and many surprises.
The capital and largest city of Ireland, Dublin is the gateway to the rest of the country. It has beautifully preserved its historical heritage while at the same time touting itself as a bustling, modern metropolis. Although quite popular, Dublin, like the rest of Ireland is still unspoiled. I recently mentioned Dublin to a friend and he asked, “Why would one go there”? Perhaps there are many others who wonder what there is to see and do in Dublin, whose beauty is not apparent at first sight and might not appear as magical and grand as other European capitals. But give it some time, walk around and see how the city reveals its charms. Those who have visited Dublin, or other parts of Ireland for that matter, are besotted. And here’s why:
Dublin’s scenic beauty is one to die for. With its beautiful cliffs, beaches and spectacular harbours, Dublin is a real treat for the eyes and senses. One could easily spend hours admiring the scenery and the stunning coastline of Dublin. For more of Ireland’s breathtaking beauty, a day trip to the Irish countryside is a must. There are plenty of tours that can be arranged from Dublin to the neighboring counties of Wicklow, Kildare and Meath.
Although a typical touristy thing to do, no trip to Dublin is complete without a visit to the Guinness Storehouse, even for the non-drinkers! A popular tourist attraction located at St James's Gate in the heart of Dublin, the museum gives an interesting insight into the history of Ireland’s most famous produce. Not only do you get a pint of Guinness free during the tour, you can also sit and relish it at the Gravity Bar whilst admiring spectacular panoramic views of Dublin. The Temple Bar area is a fun touristy place to grab those beers.
Like most European cities, Dublin too is adorned with magnificent castles and cathedrals. The Dublin Castle is an important part of Ireland’s history and is without a doubt a must visit when in Dublin. This majestic structure is home to interesting museums, cafes, international conference centers and government buildings. The beautiful gothic-style Christ Church Cathedral is the oldest church in Dublin and an excellent example of Victorian and medieval architecture. St Patrick’s Cathedral, which is the largest cathedral in Ireland, was built in honour of the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick and is an absolute must-visit on a trip to the city.
Trinity College, also known as University of Dublin, is Ireland’s oldest university and one of the world’s most prestigious educational institutions. Apart from the magnificent structure and a beautiful landscape, the university is famous for being home to the Book of Kells, the Latin manuscript written by monks nearly two centuries ago. And while you are there, don’t forget to click a picture in front of the famous Trinity Bell!
There is all this and much more to explore in this former city of Vikings. A vibrant city with a rich history, abundant natural beauty, a bustling nightlife and an array of fascinating attractions, Dublin is a definite must-visit destination for a truly unique experience. So, are you ready to get on the rocky road to Dublin?
