Visiting Chiang Mai for the first time?
The spiritual capital of Thailand, Chiang Mai will make you fall in love with its laid-back, friendly and fun vibe. Not to forget, the equally peaceful and serene vibe that will also have you captivated.
Which gets us to our first stop, temples, better known as ‘wats’ in Thai!
Your first stop should be The Wat Phra That Doi Suthep! Set atop the Doi Suthep Mountain, the temple stands tall offering a view of the entire city and is marked by seven-headed serpent statues that line up a fleet of 306 stairs. Amazing isn’t it?
What will attract you next is the gold-plated pagoda style roof of Wat Phra Singh. An equally famous temple, it is known to have pilgrims visit to worship the striking Buddha image known as Phra Singh (Lion Buddha). Don’t forget to click a selfie with the image.
Don’t keep your phone/camera inside yet because your next temple is going to be the pure white structure of Wat Kong Khun. Located at an hour and a half’s distance from Chiang Mai, the mesmerizing temple is a vision in white and absolutely photo-worthy!
Now, there’s something for history buffs too!
Pack yourself to the ruins of Wat Chedi Luang to reward yourself with sights of the standing Buddha statue Phra Chao Attarot and for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to chat with the monks present there.
When in Thailand, indulging in Thai food is a must!
The Khao Soi at Khao Soi Khun Yai, finger food and delicious snacks at the Chiang Mai Gate Market street food stalls and a delicious meal at café Pun Pun will be worth the try!
Trust Chiang Mai to be as beautiful at night as is in the day. Right from its night bazaars to the popular night safaris, the city has something to offer for each and every traveller.
Take the traditional tuk-tuk to visit the Kalare Night Market that holds a host of shops for garments, jewellery and accessories or visit Chiang Mai’s oldest public market, Warorot that has numerous stalls selling Thai household items.
Don’t forget to explore The Sunday Walking Street and Saturday Walking Street, famous for exquisite Buddha paintings, Thai musical instruments, food markets and Northern Thai–themed souvenirs.
If you’re feeling up to some real adventure, the city won’t disappoint. Try cliff jumping at The Grand Canyon, kayaking at Mae Ngat Valley, trekking at Doi Inthanon National Park and hot air ballooning at Horizon Village Resort if you want to get your heart racing to the T!
Animal lovers could go bathe and bond with elephants at the Elephant Nature Park or dine and feed animals at the unique Night safari at Nocturnal Zoo!
The Huay Kaew Waterfall, Chiang Mai Zoo and Doi Inthanon National Park which is home to the highest mountain in Thailand are other places that you must visit on your trip.
And, if you want to try something completely bizarre and fun, you could go watch the Chiang Mai Ladyboy Cabaret Show, eat a hundred-year-old egg at Somphet market and actually enter the tiger cages at the Tiger Kingdom.
But, will you?
