The Cherai Beach is a palm-fringed confluence of the backwaters and the Arabian Sea, where you can choose to go swimming during low tides, ride a water scooter or lay back and watch porpoises and dolphins swim by. And when you are done basking in the sun and devouring the sight of the sunset, head back into your room after tucking into some fresh seafood (and it wouldn’t get fresher than this), and snooze away to the rhythm of the waves on the shore.

Watch herds of porpoises and dolphins as you sail over the azure waters of Arabian Sea’s coastline on a gazelle. These yatch-like boats, which are usually manned by a small crew, can accommodate up to 6 people on board, and come equipped with facilities like a washroom, shower, galley and sleeping quarters. Then, as the gazelles drop anchor off the shore, enjoy the waterside view of your favourite tourist spots: Fort Kochi, Bolghatty Island, Vypeen Island, and the array of Chinese fishing nets. And don’t forget to keep those cameras poised to catch the occasional dolphins popping out of the water for air.
Cosy up to the remnants of the Chinese influence in the city. Enjoy the walks on the Mahatma Gandhi promenades and marvel at the beautiful silhouettes created by the setting sun against the Chinese fishing nets, or Cheena Vala, as the locals call them. Make the most of bargaining with the fishmongers waiting to sell their ware, and pick your choice of seafood from the wide variety on display. Thereafter, have the fresh-off-the-boat catch cooked as per your tastes at any of the wayside stalls.

Situated at the north end of Vypeen Island in Kochi, Munambam Beach is quite the hidden treasure for tourists. Expect clean, golden sands that slope into the Arabian Sea, an unending palm-fringed coastline, and sunsets that induce awe. Munambam is also the confluence of the Periyar River and the Arabian Sea, so one thing you can be assured of is an unending supply of scenic beauty. So get those DSLRs prepped up for some award-winning clicks! What’s more, Kerala Tourism is just about setting up signboards here. That means it’s going to remain peaceful for a little while longer. Go on; head there while you can still have the best of both worlds.
One of the lesser known beaches in Kochi, this should be your go-to if running into other tourists (or crowds) while admiring a sunset is not your thing! Make a day trip to the Puthuvype Beach, a picture-perfect spot, where the tranquil seas roll into golden sand, stark against the green cover and pine trees on the shoreline. Spend some quiet time as you watch the waves, or enjoy the sights of the fishermen folk heading out into the sea. Then, roll up your sleeves and harvest clams off the beach. You could also join the locals in a game of football or fly a kite with them. The beach also has a light house, better known as the Cochin Lighthouse, which was believed to be the tallest in Asia when it was constructed. Climb up to the top for a fantastic view of the coastal panorama.
