Vibrant neighbourhoods, a dynamic line-up of cultural events and larger-than-life buildings and monuments—Washington DC indeed comes across as an awe-inspiring blend of history, politics, culture, nightlife and more. Here we’ve got a list of the absolute must-do things at the American capital so as to experience the best of what it has to offer.

1. Pay Your Tribute to Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial

You may have seen this 1922 neo-classical monument etched on coins or in a movie, but you must visit it in person to witness its true grandeur and historical magnificence. A tribute to the 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, this structure will woo you with its Greek temple-inspired architecture and the massive statue of the late President that sits right at the center of it.

Adding to the appeal of this place are the two famous speeches of the late President—Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural Speech—inscribed on the walls. If you are a history buff looking to get a peek into the life of Lincoln, then this is the place to be.

2. Visit America’s Most Powerful House

Imagine the thrill of being at the residence of the world’s most powerful person! The White House – the home of every American President since John Adams in 1800, stands as a symbol of the vibrant democracy that America is. But before you get too excited, just know that you will need to apply for the visit in advance. If you manage to get the permission, you’ll be lucky to check out the interiors of the residence.

3. Get Set for a Picnic at the Rock Creek Park

One of DC’s most-loved recreational destinations, Rock Creek Park is 2000 acres of forested area cradled amid billion-dollar high-rises and contemporary corridors. On a pleasant day, it is just the place for a day-out or picnic, with a wide array of activities to participate in.

Set out on the 29 miles hiking trail, peddle through the picturesque web of cycling tracks, go horse-back riding, or play a round of golf—there is no dearth of the outdoorsy things you can do here. Also check out the granite boulder marking the historic spot of Lincoln’s Fort Steven’s tour, and the Smithsonian National Zoo, which is home to the very first Pandas of America!

4. Catch a Show at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is a memorial that celebrates the life of America’s most beloved President. Nestled on the breathtakingly beautiful banks of the Potomac River, the venue’s rooftop zone offers views which are a craze among visitors.

Apart from presenting the National Symphony Orchestra, the Suzanne Farrell Ballet and the Washington National Opera, this cultural center also hosts numerous other outstanding theater and musical performances all year long. Be prepared to shell out money, as the entry costs are a bit steep here. However, you could also enjoy free shows on the Millennium Stage.

5. Get a Taste of History and Politics at the U.S. Capitol

The U.S. Capitol is an unrivaled attraction for those interested in the story of America. While you explore the interiors, you’ll find charming paintings, illustrations and sculptures portraying iconic events from American history, along with a 150-year-old cast iron dome. Moreover, a tour of the Library of Congress—deemed as the largest library in the world— will leave you awe-struck. In case you are planning to visit during the busy season or need special access to the gallery, it might be a good idea to take prior permissions from the concerned authorities.

As is evident, Washington DC is a melting pot of eclectic activities, which will keep surprising you at every step. Have the time of your life at the vibrant American capital!
