You are sitting in a restaurant. The waiter comes with your food and you immediately notice his nice demeanour. You chat with him and you realise he is a murderer serving life sentence! Would that freak you out? Well, under normal circumstances, yes. But if you are at Tihar Food Court, Delhi, you will be prepared for such situations, not to mention some seriously lip-smacking food too. Whatever your expectations of dining at the Tihar Food Court might be, you can definitely count on this experience to be a little out of the ordinary!

Opened in July 2014 within South Asia’s largest prison complex Tihar Jail, Tihar Food Court is the result of the reformative process where convicts have been groomed in hotel management skills and taught to earn a living. It is a spacious restaurant, lined with wooden tables seating 50 people, and the walls adorned with paintings by the convicts definitely catch your attention.

Do They Serve Err…Jail Food?

From soups and Chinese cuisine to seafood and vegetarian fare, the Tihar Food Court serves everything. People rave about the simplicity and taste of the food—particularly their chaat and samosas. The training imparted to the inmates by a prestigious hotel management school clearly shines through in their mannerisms and etiquette. It comes as little surprise that the venue has been hailed as a low-cost-high-service restaurant by many food portals. A mean for two costs to the tune of Rs.300.

Are the Convicts Dangerous?

No. In fact, they are the most well-mannered and courteous waiters you will ever come across. To work in this restaurant, convicts must have an absolutely clean record for past 12 years of imprisonment and should have completed high school. They are then given special training in serving people.
